... which executes just fine until it hits MyCustomClass.run(). When it is supposed to start such method, it simply doesn't do it. The application doesn't pause, stop or crash... it just keeps on waiting to continue after the background processing is done, which is not happening for some unknown reason.

Immediately off the bat I see that you're making Swing calls from within the SwingWorker's doInBackground, something which completely defeats the purpose of using a SwingWorker or background thread. Also, the call you're making, one that displays a modal dialog:

will pause all code flow below it until the dialog is no longer visible, as that is how modal dialogs function. This is what is blocking your SwingWorker. You must try to separate your code so that Swing calls are only made on the Swing event thread, and use the worker for only the background work.

So, the first quick change I would make in your code above would be to remove waitingDialog.setVisible(true); from your SwingWorker doInBackground() method, and then call the waitingDialog.setVisible(true); method AFTER executing the SwingWorker, i.e., after backgroundThread.execute(); in particular. I know it seems counter-intuitive to call dispose on it seemingly before making it visible, but trust me, it will work better this way, since the dispose call will be blocked by the time it takes to run the background thread.

Swingworker is known to swallow runtime exceptions in the background thread. You can detect them by performing a "get()" in the done() method of the Swingworker. Do a search for "SimpleSwingWorker" and you will find examples of how to do this.

The lyrics of "Piece of Me" are written as a reaction to the scrutiny of Spears's private life in the media. They deal with fame and living under the spotlight.[12] During the first verse, Spears sings the hookline "You want a piece of me?", that is repeated throughout the song. According to Kelefa Sanneh of The New York Times, the line "could be an accusation or an invitation or a threat".[11] "Piece of Me" is constructed in the common verse-chorus pattern. "Piece of Me" is written like a biography retelling Spears's mishaps, sung in a nearly spoken manner.[8] Alex Fletcher of Digital Spy compared the lyrics to Amy Winehouse's "Rehab" (2006).[9] Bill Lamb of About.com said that "Piece of Me" makes Michael Jackson's "Scream" (1995) "sound like a whimper."[8]

"On [the music video], I really just wanted to put the mirror back onto the whole experience. You can see that she had that kind of confidence. And, literally, every take became a more and more confident take, so that she could have fun with what was going on. Not being over-the-top sarcastic, but ... having a laugh at everything that was going on around her, with confidence. [...] The very last dance of the piece, she had her hair up, and I go, 'Can you just do one for me with your hair down?' She dropped her hair down. You'll see we intercut with her hair up and her hair down. That was the last piece. She just rocked it from her heart. She choreographed that last dance at the very end. She did that on her own and said, 'Let's go for it'".[46]

The video begins with four blonde women changing their clothes, putting make up on and dancing in a bedroom. Outside, several paparazzi are taking pictures of the situation through the window. Spears appears in front of a multi-colored, illuminated background wearing a short brown fur vest, a sequined black bra and ripped low-rise jeans.[47] There are also intercut scenes of Spears wearing a white fur coat tearing down tabloid covers such as In Touch Weekly and creating positive ones, such as "It's Britney, Bitch" and "Exceptional Earner". One tabloid in particular is labeled Rats Weakly, likely a pun of Star when written backwards. During the first chorus, Spears joins the four women, all wearing matching blond bob wigs, dark sunglasses and black trench coats being hounded by paparazzi.[44]

An international version of the video was also officially released. This version is almost exactly the same as the original, with the only difference being that some of the early shots where Spears dances in front of the multicolored background are replaced by shots of Spears with a short blonde bob wig wearing a purple dress and in front of a black background with flashing lights.[53]

I know there's highlighting the background of text, but this only applies to the background around the text. Can the entire background be changed in colour so it doesn't look all choppy? I need different backgrounds for different portion of text through out the document, so I can't just change the default from white.

Google Drawings have tools to insert shapes and text objects. It could be used to create text blocks with the required background color. You could create the Drawing directly from the Google Documents UI, just click Insert > Drawing.... One benefit of this method is that the drawing could be easily edited.

To remove the background color from a Google Doc, save the Google Doc as a Word Doc. Open the document in Word and enable editing on the yellow banner at the top of the document. Then to remove the color background, click on Design > Page Color > No Color. You can resave the document as a Google Doc. I hope this helps.

This technique works best on photos of simple objects with defined edges on plain backgrounds, like a studio photograph that uses a single-color backdrop or even a smartphone image taken against a white or solid-color floor or wall.

In the Select and Mask... workspace, you can refine your selection to make sure there are no stray pieces of the background. Play with the Radius, Smooth, Feather, Contrast, and Shift Edge sliders to perfect all the details. If you need to add or remove parts of your mask, just use the Quick Selection, Refine Edge, Object Selection, and other tools on the left side of the panel.

With your selection perfected, simply scroll to the bottom of the Select and Mask... workspace and choose to output it to a Layer Mask. Now you have a perfect cutout, no matter the original background.
