I absolutely LOVE this app!!! We travel a lot and stay on people's property across the U.S. and I always download maps for the areas we are going to be in. I love checking out the older topo maps and seeing what I can find and it's really fun to show the property owners what used to be around. I've also found a cave that a property owner didn't know they had, super cool! I also use it for metal detecting to find good places to go! 10/10 this app is awesome!

You can download AMC maps! Edit as of 05/08/2022: I've been using this on several 4000 footers in NH, and I definitely still recommend this app. It's a great additional tool for the physical map you should already have. It shows where you are on the map based on your phone's GPS. It also allows you to take notes by placing pins on the downloaded map. Also note: once a map is downloaded, the app works offline.

Great app!.. everything I like about paper maps and nothing I hate about digital maps. Satelite connection is very solid and tracking is accurate. This app also hosts a sweet cache of maps. I use it to get around northern WI on atv and snow machine. I used it to find my property boundries by setting the coordinates and following the heading! I use this app nearly every day and I would just like to say thanks a bunch to the developers.

Really cool app. It allows me to download state park maps, which are available for free, and use them to navigate around hiking trails in real-time so I can become more familiar with them. Very useful tool and makes it a lot less daunting to go to larger areas without having to worry about getting lost.

This is the best map app ever! I am not an expert by any means, but I do use them a lot, and this app is the closest thing to GPS you can get! Many features, too many to mention here! Try it you will like it! Of course, it costs to buy maps and get excellent functionality from the app itself but it's well worth the price. Try it free (I bet you buy it)

Hey, I make maps in ArcGIS. For forestry applications, the Avenza Maps app is king. Everyone uses it, and most buy a licence for it. In addition to forestry, we also make maps for recreation users. I was hoping to find an alternative app to Avenza for the Joe Blow hiker that would allow them to load in our GeoPDFs. Our main motivation is safety, encouraging people to use pre-made maps while out in the bush, but we're also finding that the paywall of Avenza is discouraging a lot of folks.

Did you know that certain types of PDF maps can show your exact position on a trail? These are called geo-referenced PDFs. When the map is opened using an app on your smart phone, a dot/reference point displays on the device's screen at your exact location. These maps use your GPS, not your cell signal, so they work even when you do not have service (as long as you have downloaded the map to your phone in advance). As you move along the trail, the dot will move with you. The map will guide your way for as long as your device's battery works.

I'm exporting maps from ArcGIS Pro as pdfs for use in the Avenza app. Recently, the maps are showing up as "not referenced" in that app - even though I'm specifying that the georeferencing be maintained when exported from Pro. I can make the same map in ArcMap, export it as a pdf and open it up in Avenza as a referenced map. Has anyone else been having this issue? Or care to share some advice? Thanks!

Hi Cassie,

I had an issue where suddenly my maps displayed the 'map not referenced' error. I remembered that I was using a custom CRS. Once I changed that back to EPSG:4326 (for example only... not saying you have to!) it worked again.

Interestingly enough, when I exported as a TIFF with the GeoTIFF tags turned on, and using a custom CRS, I could load the geotiff into Avenza.

Note: The free version of the Avenza app lets you store as many maps as you want if you download them through the Avenza Map Store. If you get your geoPDF maps from somewhere else and open them in Avenza, the free version will limit you to three maps.

This result is a shame as the smaller publishers will have maps updated, done at a professional level, and typically more accurate than the older USGS quads, USFS maps, and even commercially produced maps rarely updated, often inaccurate, and just plain wrong in some cases (Cough! Cough! NatGeo maps).

When Joan or I use Gaia, the tool itself works well for us [1] vs. CalTopo (The app still not quite up to prime time use IMO. The desktop app, of course, is the best in class.) due to its wealth of features, easy downloading, and intuitive UI.  However, we still get beholden to the layers and mix and match to get optimum maps with varying accuracy.

We do not wholly trust the NatGeo layer (road missing still in obvious use, trails not on the maps that have existed for 20+ yrs, etc.) and the USGS maps topographically accurate and key for off-trail technical travel, but lacking modern details. The USFS maps, of course, only cover USFS lands (and not continually updated, either). Finally, the Open Street Map layer (Gais GPS default) only ends up as accurate as the input provided.

For the La Sal Mountains, the only maps I find accurate end up being the Lat40 maps. These maps get updated regularly, have correct info(including single-track MTB routes) and valuable information about the trails. Frankly, the NatGeo La Sal maps provide mainly a broad overview for general info. Only a step or two up from the trifold-style maps you get for free at NPS booths.

If you are not familiar with these apps, the short answer is that your device uses the built-in GPS of your Android or iOS device to navigate on a pre-stored map; no cellular connection necessary if you download the appropriate maps ahead of time.

I find the open-source nature of Avenza useful for these specialty maps. Many non-profits such as the Cohos Trail or the Continental Divide Trai Coalition offer their maps via the Avenza store for your use where otherwise may not be an economically feasible option for print maps or with a larger company.

Purchasing individual maps will get expensive. Unless you have a specific use, I will use CalTopo, Backcountry Navigator, Gaia GPS, or similar tools instead for the greater variety and more cost-effective use vs. the ala carte model of individual map sets.

WY and CO Game&Fish use Avenza for their maps of walk-in hunting areas, fishing accesses, etc. It works as you say, acceptably well, though not as well as a dedicated map app. I do like having the PDF for printing out. The main reason to get a subscription is that the free Avenza is limited in the number of maps that can be loaded in the app.

Mostly I use the OnX hunting application now. I find the UI is simpler and easier than any of Garmin (aiee), Gaia, CalTopo. So far the maps have matched the territory..

YEp. As mentioned people who use an app in their professional roles (such as an Arch resource) will have a different take for sure. The review I linked to seems to be a Canadian FS equivalent/GIS resource with many different needs than mine

. As an aside, Joan and I always take print maps. ?

Georeferenced PDF maps contain embedded coordinates that allow you to track your actual location on the map. DEC is now using georeferencing in many of our recreation maps as a public service that will improve safety for people who enjoy outdoor activities on the nearly 5 million acres of lands we manage .

NOTE: The free version of the Avenza App limits users to having three maps downloaded to the app at any one time. As an alternative to upgrading the app, you can store GeoPDF files on your phone, and cycle them in and out of the Avenza App as you use them.

These PDF maps are designed for use on your GPS-enabled mobile device and can be displayed on any PDF reader. When viewed in an installed mobile map application, each map is designed so that your location can be displayed on screen in real time. Your location will be a colored dot on the map.

Both can be easily added into Avenza maps and the layer (.kmz file) can be linked to the map allowing you to see plot locations on the map. Currently, they only appear as tiny white dots. I want the names of the features to be displayed on the map, such as '2016AK261101.'

Since the unveiling of Avenza, CalTopo has released their own app that gives you the power of their web platform in the palm of your hand. Just like Avenza, this gives the distinct advantage of being able to utilize detailed CalTopo maps in real-time in the field. You can build annotated maps and routes on your phone, or you can sync the ones you built on your computer. All you need to do is log into your CalTopo account, and you instantly have seamless access to their features. ff782bc1db
