You seem to be referring to SDH subtitles - for the deaf or hearing-impaired. These tend to also indicate things like voice stresses, significant background sounds, music indicators, etc. They're like CC but with additional notes. Depending on the specific system used to carry the text, they can be stylised, coloured, placed in different areas of the screen to not cover significant action, or indicate which character is speaking, if it's not obvious from lip movement etc.

By the time a movie hits streaming, you can see there's a whole list of subtitle tracks, one for each language, & up to three for English - forced [foreign translation only], English [all dialog] and SDH [plus cues for audio events].

I can't comment on why any specific cinema would be doing this, but perhaps they run one or two shows a day specifically with the subtitles on, for the hearing-impaired. Check their programming schedule.

Hey guys, I posted this at Insomniac Forums but they dont know whats wrong.

I dont have the subtitles option on Going Commando, I mean, I have but I cant select it. My version is European and Ive been told that the US version has subtitles. Anyone knows whats wrong?

When his brother is killed in a robbery, paraplegic Marine Jake Sully decides to take his place in a mission on the distant world of Pandora. There he learns of greedy corporate figurehead Parker Selfridge's intentions of driving off the native humanoid "Na'vi" in order to mine for the precious material scattered throughout their rich woodland. In exchange for the spinal surgery that will fix his legs, Jake gathers knowledge, of the Indigenous Race and their Culture, for the cooperating military unit spearheaded by gung-ho Colonel Quaritch, while simultaneously attempting to infiltrate the Na'vi people with the use of an "avatar" identity. While Jake begins to bond with the native tribe and quickly falls in love with the beautiful alien Neytiri, the restless Colonel moves forward with his ruthless extermination tactics, forcing the soldier to take a stand - and fight back in an epic battle for the fate of Pandora. To change the default subtitles language in Settings, go to Settings > Video and Audio > Audio > Subtitle Language, then choose the language you want. If you don't want automatic subtitles and you're using an Apple TV, go to Settings > Video and Audio, then turn off Automatic Subtitles. If you're using a smart TV or streaming device, go to Settings > General, then turn off Automatic Subtitles.

If you can't see subtitles or language options, they may not be available for that TV programme or film. Check the show or film descriptions page in the Apple TV app to find out what subtitles or languages are available.

It would be super helpful for my team if .SRT subtitle files were supported in Dropbox Replay. Almost all of our projects use subtitles and it's hard to convince my team on Replay without some sort of subtitle/caption support. It's also important for accessibility standards. Lots of reasons to support captions.

I followed your steps - downloaded MKVToolnix, opened MKVMerge GUI. Opened the mkv file produced by handbrake, and implemented the settings above. Remuxing took just minutes and the result worked as expected - selectable subtitles!

I scratched my head for days on this, and finally remembered the whole zlip thing, so ran the video through mkvmerge, and zlib compressed the subtitles and now I can play the movie and watch subtitles!

The only issue I've run into so far is when movies span multiple discs. I figure, once I'm digitizing, I should merge the two so I get a seamless viewing. The problem is, the only way I have to cleanly merge the files is a video editor (I happen to be using VSDC Free Video Editor, but I'm not married to it). The problem is that I lose subtitles. I've only had to do this once and I accepted the loss, but I'm going to hit it again later (think LoTR extended versions) and I don't want to lose them there.

It is said that learning a different language gives one a new perspective and vision in life, more of a new life. But how do you learn a new language? There are various ways of learning a new language, the use of help subtitles being amongst the major. An education subtitle is one way to learn a new language fast.

How to learn a new language quickly can be a big nightmare to many, but a big inspiration comes in whereby regardless of the mistakes one is making or how slow they are progressing, they are still far better ahead of everyone who is not trying. An education subtitle gives language comprehension a new approach. Do you know what a foreign accent is? It is depicted to be a great sign of bravery. Researchers have found out that watching an education full movie with subtitles helps students to learn a new language fast when used to supplement the regular studying.

Reading and listening at the same time constitute two different functions of the brain, however, building up self-confidence battle to speak a new language is won by watching an education full movie with subtitles as guidelines, regardless of whether there are mistakes made or not everything is understood.

The help subtitles in audio-visuals do facilitate aspects of second language learning such as vocabulary learning and plot comprehension. A foreign language is likened to a delicate muscle, a frail. When not used frequently, it weakens.

According to some researchers, both foreign and native education subtitles enhance language production when it comes to how to learn a new language quickly. Other studies argue that intra-lingual subtitles are more effective than inter-lingual, reversed ones. Intra-lingual subtitles help listeners link sounds with well-known words spellings, thereby aiding to the formation of perceptual categories for improved decoding of the speech input.

An education subtitle reveals segmentation, word boundaries, and result in accent variations which are unified. They give a learner a great array of more benefits because they not only improve their speech but also help them associate and identify individual words with their sounds. Reverse education subtitles are more beneficial for beginners. This is so because it familiarizes them with the sounds used by the native speakers.

The dual help subtitles employ a foreign language soundtrack, with subtitles in both the native and foreign language. This means more information is displayed on these subtitles, although they are disadvantaged by the fact that there is hardly enough time to read through both subtitles. One, therefore, sticks with looking at one of the two.

In conclusion, the more exposure you have to your target language, the better. Practice too makes perfect, and when learning a new language, it is best to get a lot of exposure to it. These education subtitles are a great way to learn a new language fast.

As foreign language subtitles tend to take the lead as compared to native education help subtitles, beginner students may struggle with both. It is therefore advisable for a beginner student to try out an education full movie with subtitles in the native language before getting comfortable with foreign subtitles where they can easily connect both the subtitles and audio in the foreign language.

I have an .avi and an .srt for a Mandarin movie. I used HandBrakeCLI to generate a M4V file that I could import into iTunes. In iTunes there is an option to turn the subtitles on and off, which works beautifully.

But when I move over to my AppleTV and select the movie from my computer's library, the subtitles do not show when played. I don't see any option in the AppleTV UI to turn subtitles on/off during movie playback.

I'm not sure whether you have a problem with the subtitle track for that specific rip you made however, generally, using the AppleTV 2nd Gen, when the movie is playing, you can hold down the 'Select' button on the remote for a few seconds and it will show you a menu where you can choose whether to display any subtitles for this movie and also which audio track to use (useful if you have two language tracks or have also ripped the commentary track to your file). e24fc04721
