Australia enjoys some of the best health standards in the world. To maintain these standards, most visa applicants are required to meet certain minimum health standards in order to be granted a visa. We refer to this as meeting 'the health requirement'.

Everyone who wants to enter Australia must be of good character and will be assessed against the character requirements. Applicants must declare all recorded offences to us. If you do not declare an offence and we become aware of this it might have a negative impact on your application.

Applicants currently living in the United States may be requested to obtain both a State-wide police clearance from each State of residence in the USA during the last 12 months AND an FBI clearance in their current name and any other name they are known by or have previously been known by.

Applicants lodging visa applications in selected locations, regardless of nationality, may be requested to attend an AVAC or an ABCC in person to lodge their application and/or provide their biometrics.

Please note, you should not book flights or make travel commitments until you have a valid visa to travel to Australia. The Department of Home Affairs will not be liable for any financial loss incurred by travellers whose visa application was finalised later than expected, or where an application is not successful.

There are Australian registered migration agents working all around the world. These agents are subject to the same Code of Conduct, professional development and regulations as registered migration agents based in Australia. More information about Australia's efforts to ensure the integrity of the migration advice profession is available at: www.mara.gov.au.

You may be eligible for an Australian Electronic Travel Authority (ETA). For information, please visit Electronic Travel Authority. If you are unable to use the AustralianETA app, please visit explore visa options.

Use ImmiAccount to lodge your application, make a payment, update your details or circumstances, upload documents, and track the progress of your application. If you have provided documents by email to the Department, you will receive an automated acknowledgement. Please remember to check your junk folder and add us as a safe sender.

The Department is committed to building more efficient and effective ways of delivering accessible services through the use of digital channels as our default form of delivery. As such, you can complete a number of services online without needing to contact the Department directly. This includes:

The Australian Department of Home Affairs is moving towards a global visa processing model. This means that any application may be processed in an office other than where it is lodged. As such it is important that all supporting documents attached to the application which are not in English, be accompanied by an English translation.

The English translations must be appropriately endorsed translations. In Australia, translators must be accredited by the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters. Their accreditation details must be recorded on the translation.

Translations provided by non-accredited translators outside Australia should be endorsed by the translator with their full name, address, telephone number, and details of their qualifications and experience in the language being translated.

Please ensure that when providing an English translation, that a copy of the original document is also provided. Failure to provide an English translation of supporting documentation may delay processing and result in the document not being considered as part of the visa application.

You may be eligible for Australian citizenship by descent if you were born outside Australia and one (or both) of your parents was also an Australian citizen at the time of your birth. Check your eligibility before you apply.

An Australian citizenship certificate is an official document that shows that a person is an Australian citizen. If you meet requirements, you can get a certificate, or replace one that has been lost, destroyed or damaged. Check your eligibility before you apply.

Visa applicants may be required to provide their biometric identifiers (digital facial image and fingerprint scan). If required, you will be contacted to complete this process. Please visit biometrics collection process.

Visa applicants in the Philippines must complete biometric (face photograph and fingerprint scan) collection for each application lodged, irrespective of their nationality, unless they are excluded or exempt from the biometric program.

Biometrics are collected through a quick and easy process that captures a photograph of your face and a 10-digit electronic fingerprint. Applicants will be required to provide their biometrics each and every time they apply for a visa.

When you lodge your application online, you will be sent a request to provide personal identifiers (biometrics) via email. You should make an appointment to attend an Australian Biometrics Collection Centre (ABCC) in person to provide your biometrics. Take a copy of that email and your passport to the appointment.

Since 1 July 2021, applicants approved for Australian citizenship by descent and Australian citizenship by adoption will receive an Australian citizenship certificate instead of an Australian citizenship extract. The Government will not issue citizenship extracts for applications approved on or after 1 July 2021. You can still use a citizenship extract (issued prior to 1 July 2021), to apply for an Australian Passport.

Applicants are encouraged to provide an Australian postal address with their application. If you are unable to provide one, we will send your certificate to the Australian Embassy and notify you on how you can collect the certificate. For further information, please visit Evidence of citizenship and certificates.

We recommend that you lodge your application early and you book your flight only after your visa has been granted. The Australian Government does not accept any responsibility or liability for financial losses related to the booking of flights and accommodation, which are incurred by applicants whose visa application was finalised later than expected or whose application was ultimately unsuccessful. Please check the current Global visa processing times (homeaffairs.gov.au) and ensure you leave sufficient time for processing of your application.

If you are planning to visit Australia during the holiday periods, we encourage you to apply as early as possible and submit complete applications, including English translations of documents not issued in English.

The Australian Embassy in Bangkok receives a significant amount of correspondence each day. Before contacting us, we encourage you to use online services and information available on this website, and the Home Affairs website, to get the information you require. If, after accessing these websites, you still require additional information or assistance you can:

If your application is urgent due to compelling or compassionate reasons (for example, a close family member has become ill suddenly in Australia), please submit a Compelling and compassionate request for travel via the Australian Immigration Enquiry Form. Please ensure your request contains supporting documentation or other information (for example, medical certificate). Your application may not be able to be expedited if you do not provide relevant supporting evidence.

We do not consider urgent requests to travel to attend business meetings or where your flight is departing soon as genuine emergencies. We try to process all applications as quickly as we can, however we cannot be held responsible if you have pre-booked your travel and your application is not lodged early enough to allow the processing of your application. Some applications will also require us to undertake further assessments, which may take more time.

All applicants in Thailand and Myanmar must complete biometric (face photograph and fingerprint scan) collection for each application lodged, irrespective of their nationality, unless they are excluded or exempt from the program.

You must provide your biometrics within 14 days of online lodgement or notify the relevant processing office if unable to do so. In the event that you do not provide your biometrics within this timeframe, your application will be refused.

VFS Global operates two ABCCs in Thailand (in Bangkok and Chiang Mai) and one in Myanmar (in Yangon). The ABCC will charge a service fee for the lodgement of applications and collection of biometrics.

The health requirement will depend on your personal circumstances and the visa that you have applied for. All permanent visa applicants and certain temporary visa applicants will be required to undergo health examinations as a part of the visa application process.

If you have been requested to undertake a health examination there is no guarantee of a positive visa outcome. If you fail to meet the health requirement your visa may be refused, however this will depend on the visa subclass you have applied for. Some visa subclasses allow a health waiver to be exercised in certain circumstances.

Everyone who wants to enter Australia must be of good character and will be assessed against the character requirements. As part of your visa application, you might be required to provide a police clearance certificate or other evidence to satisfy the character requirements. 152ee80cbc
