The name aquamarine comes from aqua (Latin for 'water'), and marine, deriving from marina (Latin for 'of the sea').[12] The word aquamarine was first used in the year 1677.[13]

The value of aquamarine is determined by its weight, colour,[4] cut, and clarity.[14] Due to its relative abundance, aquamarine is comparatively less expensive than other gemstones within the beryl group, such as emerald or bixbite (red beryl) but is typically more expensive than similarly coloured gemstones such as blue topaz.[7][9] Naturally occurring blue hued aquamarine specimens are more expensive than those that have undergone heat treatment to reduce yellow tones caused by ferric iron.[9] Cut aquamarines that are over 25 carats will have a lower price per carat than smaller ones of the same quality.[15]

Aquamarine is the birth stone for the month of March.[4] It has historically been used a symbol for youth and happiness due to its color, which has also, along with its name, made Western culture connect it with the ocean.[16][15] Ancient Romans believed that aquamarine could protect people who are travelling across the sea;[17] they also used aquamarine to prevent illnesses.

Named after the color of sea water, aquamarine is the blue to blue-green member of the beryl family. Readily available and moderately priced, the modern March birthstone makes an excellent jewelry stone.

Aquamarine obtains its blue color from iron impurities within colorless beryl. The deeper the blue color, the more valuable it is, but aquamarine is generally very light. It is routinely heat treated to bring out the blue tones, but the treatment is undetectable and very stable.

While emerald tends to be hazy and full of inclusions, aquamarine has remarkably high clarity, another factor that makes it perfect as the center stone for large cocktail rings. It is usually faceted in rectangular or square cuts, and has a vitreous luster, so a well-cut gem really sparkles. And because aquamarine is plentiful, large, well-cut stones are common.

Obviously the lore attached to aquamarine was penned by men: it is said to calm waves and keep sailors safe at sea, and bring the wearer protection against foes in battle. (Apparently it was kept in treasure chests by mermaids, who doled it out to protect their favorite sailors).

Ladies, we see another purpose altogether for the cool powers of aquamarine: it is said to match perfectly with spring dresses and winter evening gowns, and it has the power to bring the wearer many compliments.

In Medieval times, aquamarine was also said to enhance the happiness of marriages. Well of course it does! Any gemstone has that power, especially when gifted by the husband to the wife. Especially on the eve of the 19th wedding anniversary, for which aquamarine is the official gemstone.

Aquamarines, which are a form of the mineral beryl, range from blue-green to deep blue. Naturally occurring deep-blue aquamarines are the rarest and most valuable. Some of these crystals weigh more than 250 pounds.

Aquamarine, as the name suggests, is the sea-blue variety of the mineral beryl. Its color depends on the relative amounts of impurities of iron. Heating removes the green tones, resulting in a more pure shade of blue. Deep blue is the most highly prized color for the gem. The large aquamarine crystal shown here weighs 15,256ct (131 kg or 6.7 lbs). Its near perfect shape and few internal flaws indicate that it grew in ideal conditions. Large aquamarine crystals of this quality and color are rarely preserved; usually they are cut in to gems like the one seen here. This 1,000ct fancy rectangular-cut aquamarine from Brazil is nicknamed "Most Precious" after a perfume created by its donors, Evyan Perfumes, Inc.

Inclusions in aquamarine may include mica, hematite, liquid-filled (often salt-water) tubes and hoses. The liquid can expand considerably if the crystals become overheated, causing them to fracture badly, or in rare instances, to explode.

"Aquamarine Emerald" is a registered trade name that is used for a kind of triplet stone that has two layers of usually aquamarine or sometimes colorless beryl that are cemented together with a green cement to create the impression of a true emerald. This kind of stone might be difficult to detect by refractive index alone so magnification will help detect the squiggly flow lines of cement and immersing the stone in water will help detect the several layers that make it up.

Most synthetic aquamarines are actually synthetic spinel. Flux-fusion processes yield a glass rather than a crystal when beryl is processed in them although the colors can be retained. Light blue is very difficult to produce in synthetic corundum. Some of the hydrothermal processes that are now available for synthesizing gems may yield decent synthetic aquamarines.

Aqua Aura is a registered trade name that provides an aquamarine substitute. It is produced by an essentially monomolecular thick coating of gold over a quartz crystal or other stone. The gold coating is achieved by vaporizing the gold in bell and allowing the gold to precipitate on the object to be coated. Such coatings are used when one is preparing micro- or nannofossils or micro crystals for imaging in a scanning electron microscope.

Because of a fairly low refractive index, aquamarine needs a fairly deep pavilion with angles of about 43o to assure maximum internal reflection. Too shallow a pavilion will cause the stone to appear empty and too deep a pavilion will cause the center to become dark. Best results are often obtained with an emeralds style cut to take advantage of the double refraction and low birefringence. 2351a5e196
