Unfortunately, upgrading your equipment often eats up valuable resources at the absolute worst times, with a shortage of one component cascading into a weeks long scramble. At one point, I spent an hour scrounging up the wood and metal to level up my workstation so that it could create a specific resource required to upgrade my furnace so that I could finally craft the individual pieces to build whatever the hell it was I wanted to make in the first place.

The game takes place long after civilization has been destroyed, where humans have emerged from underground and begun rebuilding society. The player is cast in the role of the child of a famous builder, who inherits their father's workshop in the independent city state of Portia after he goes travelling. The goal of the game is to expand the city of Portia and become the best builder.[2]

The player must gather resources and combine them in recipes to create items. Eventually, players gain more tools that allow them to harvest resources faster, such as a chainsaw to chop down large trees.[2] Once items are complete, they can be submitted for rewards, town favor and money. The largest assignments can directly change the town itself.[2] The game also contains dungeons that require the player to fight enemies.[2] It combines aspects of role-playing video games and simulation games.

My Time at Portia was initially released as an early access game on Steam from 23 January 2018 [3] before being fully released a year later. Three months later, it was ported to the following consoles: Nintendo Switch, Xbox One and PlayStation 4. A mobile version for Android and iOS was released on 5 August 2021 followed by macOS on 12 May 2022.[4]

My Time at Portia received "mixed or average" reviews, according to review aggregator Metacritic.[5] Miranda Sanchez of IGN called its core gameplay fun, but saying that each of its parts was lacking in some way, and that the game had "annoying audio bugs".[2] Alex Fuller of RPGamer called the game "charming" and "a lovely place to spend time in", but also saying that it was too long, criticizing how "players have to wait for NPCs to decide to do something". He stated that it was "very enjoyable", but had "significant weaknesses".[21] Rich Meister of Destructoid said that while the world was "bright and full of charm", "waiting around for things to happen can get old pretty fast", and calling the game's mining "painfully dull".[22] Philippa Warr of PC Gamer criticized the game's pacing, stating, "By being so slow, My Time At Portia both repels and appeals. It offers a kind of gaming oasis, making few demands and just pootling along. That type of thing can be a place of respite for the right player or the right mood."[23] Ginny Woo of GameSpot praised its tranquil environment, pleasing aesthetics, and well-designed crafting system while lamenting the lack of meaning in several mechanics, the lack of payoff in the narrative's premise, and the conflicting day-night cycle pacing.[24] Zoe Delahunty-Light of GamesRadar+ lauded the convincing NPCs, varied seasonal events, and sense of progression while taking issue with the loading times and lack of voice acting in cutscenes.[25] Chris Scullion of Nintendo Life recommended the game after a patch was issued in order to fix its lengthy loading times.[26] Rebecca Stow of Push Square called the game "vibrant, relaxing, and brimming with charm".[27]

In October 2020, Pathea Games announced a sequel titled My Time at Sandrock, and planned to release it in early access for PC via Steam in March 2021, with the full version for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S originally planned for a mid-2022 release.[30] However, in March 2021, Pathea Games announced that they had not received a local rating certification to publish the game online, so it seemed like early access would be potentially delayed until after May 2021.[31] Early access release was subsequently pushed out further until early 2022.[32] The game released via early access on May 26, 2022.[33] After a delay from its September launch window, the full version of the game was released on November 2, 2023.[34]

My Time at Portia starts off predictably when you disembark into its expanse of rolling hills and curious ruins. Like the Marvelous Interactive titles it clearly draws inspiration from (namely Harvest Moon and Story of Seasons), it sets you up with the holy trinity of prologues: a father, a child, and a ripe plot of land. No time passes at all until you're welcomed by a well-meaning public servant who tells you that your absent parent left a legacy of building and being a Home Depot whiz before disappearing like the evening tide. Now, fresh off the boat, you're tasked with taking over for your old man and making yourself invaluable to the people whose lives he enriched, which suggests My Time at Portia will be a more fulfilling adventure than it actually ends up being.

So far so familiar. But My Time At Portia oscillates between being just enough of an engaging take on a comforting genre to draw you in, and an infuriating me-too whose glacial pace steals more of your time than it deserves.

My Time at Portia, I truly love this game. I may be extremely biased, though, as I do have a soft spot for the Stardew Valley, Harvest Moon, Story of Seasons type games. I originally picked up the PC version on Steam when it was still in early access, and it consumed all of my free time. Once I learned it was finally coming to consoles, I was, of course, super excited! So, as I was slid this copy for the PS4 for this review, I prepared myself to put my life on hold, once again, and dive back into the wonderful town of Portia!

My Time At Portia is quite a pretty looking game. I am not saying it has super realistic, next-generation graphics, but it is still very pleasing to look at. The areas in this game are quite varied and detailed for how simple they are. The swaying grass and Colorful llamas of the field behind your workshop, the bustling town with its markets, the different dungeons with their own unique sets of enemies. Even the NPCs that live in the town are unique and vibrant, each with their own style and personality. It really feels like the developers put a lot of love and care into this game.

I really had a wonderful time playing My Time At Portia again. Even on the PS4, it is still, basically, the same relaxing, time sink of a game that I fell in love with on the PC. I do hope they patch the PS4 version to fix the graphical issues and possibly even put the voice back in. As much as I have stressed these as issues, it by no means made this version a chore to play. I am just spoiled because I played it on PC first. I do intend to play both iterations of this title through to completion. Yes, even with as many hours as I have sunk into both the PC and PS4 versions there is still more that I have yet to experience out of it! So, if you are a fan of these farming/crafting/life-sims and prefer to play on console, I definitely recommend picking this one up. Pick it up on PC too while you are at it.

Welcome to your source on the All Source, the Portia Times!

Yes, everyone is wondering what happened with the recent attempt by the Sky Sharks and someone calling themselves the "Rogue Knight" to steal our newly discovered mega-relic: the All Source! Although she goes by Wendy these days...Well, firstly, we're all fine, thanks for asking! A few buildings exploded, a lot of wild sword duels took place, and... I think somehow an entire schoolhouse was used as a projectile weapon... but, other than that: fine!

Oh, and also, don't worry about the whole geopolitical nature of it all. Yes, the Rogue Knight has ties to the Duvos Empire, but it is believed that he was operating alone, hence the name... "rogue..." Furthermore, the Duvos Empire has been extremely cooperative following the Sandrock incident, so tensions seem to be settling quickly.So... if you were worried about us or the world going to war; you can stop reading here! But if you'd like to know more about what happened, read on!

Quick history lesson: an All Source computer is a rare AI from the Old World; it's hard to say how many other than ours still exist! All Source computers acted as a managing unit; one that would broadcast orders to all other AI in its network, and most of the times, these networks were the size of a whole country!

It's believed that a lack of connection to their All Sources is what has caused the rampant AI issues that we have throughout the Free Cities these days. Some hypothesize that gaining an understanding of the All Source may one day make it possible for us to heal the confused AI out there and make the world a safer place for everyone.

That, however, would not be everyone's hopes for the All Source... the Rogue Knight believed it could be used as a weapon, which he demonstrated by... using it as a weapon. Fortunately, the All Source can only use offensive functions when connected to other AI that have those functions, and for now, those devices have been destroyed.

Portian researchers, Merlin and Petra, will continue monitoring the All Source and report any findings to the public.

I spoke with Mayor Gale about repairs in Portia, apparently some of their Builders might not have the best equipment available, so we thought the course of action would be to set them up with some top-grade machinery!

Bring them to me when they're ready.

Trudy

I am the Builder from Portia who received your equipment. I didn't ask for it, it was forced upon me by the Mayor who was concerned that my workshop was falling behind. Puh!

Despite this eggy feeling on my face, I must say, your craftsmanship is top notch! So, as it turns out, I will be making use of the fine machines you've sent me. Yes, I can tell from your work that you take our craft very seriously. It's hard to find Builders like you; the riff-raff I have to put up with here, criminy!

The other Builder here is simply insufferable; always running around town, trying to butter everyone up with gifts; hardly ever in their workshop. Why is it so hard for some people to understand that the only way to be a truly great Builder is to only leave your house for 30 minutes a day for the express purpose of picking up commissions?

Well. Preaching to the choir, I'm sure. But I didn't write you to gossip. I wrote to thank you. Which I have done, most sufficiently!

 You're welcome!

If you're ever in Portia, feel free to stop in for a meeting of the minds. I'm sure I'll never find a friend in the other Builders here, so your visit will be most welcome.

From one true Builder to another,
