On the german epson support page there is also an update for the driver "EPSON Scan Updater 1.0 13-Jul-2018 0.72MBs". I also installed this afterwards with success.Probably the english version "Scanner Driver and EPSON Scan Utility v3.04A" has this update already included.

Note: Once you have the drivers installed, remember that the scanner should be turned on prior to starting/booting your computer. Otherwise, the computer may fail to recognize the scanner is attached to the computer via USB. Powering on the scanner while the computer is running, while common for many USB devices these days, often will result in a failure to recognize the presence of this scanner in my experience.

Hi AppleTreasures! Unforunately, that does not appear to be the case. There are some miscellaneous utility downloads available for older scanners (for example Epson Event Manager), but not typically drivers for the hardware. Scanners on that list that were released since Windows 10 has been available will tend to have Windows 10 drivers, for example the Epson Perfection V850 Pro.

The epson12180.exe does not appear have the 4990 driver. I downloaded the epson12181.exe and it did list the 4990. I was able to install the drive and now my scanner works. -Series/Epson-Perfection-4990-Pro/s/SPT_B11B175011

Thank you for pointing me in the right direction. I do however wonder why you suggest installing the scanner as a 4990 though. The download driver file 12180 is specifically listed by Epson for the 2400 which lucky for us apparently uses the same drivers as the 1200. I Installed as a 2400 and my 1200 scanner works perfectly in Windows 10.

Yes I had same issue as you and had to do a search in Google for the epson12181.exe since I did not find it on the Epson page. I also selected 32 bit version. I did get things to work years ago with selecting Epson 2400 from Device Manager on my other Windows 8.1 laptop but every few weeks when I went to scan (infrequent use) the driver was gone and I had to reinstall it through Device Manager. Hopefully this will not occur on my Win 10 machine using the 1200 USB scanner and the 4990 driver. I also am not sure why Vance preferred the 4990 driver and if I should have used 64 bit and if the driver will also disappear after a while on Win 10 machine. Time will tell. But not worth me buying Vuescan for 2 machines at $60 each or buying a new scanner since I scan so infrequently.

If you're using Windows and you've installed a Epson driver, VueScan's built-in drivers won't conflict with this. If you haven't installed a Windows driver for this scanner, VueScan will automatically install a driver.

More info on scanner compatibility with MacOS: I just read on Wikipedia (see link below) that Apple removed support for 32-bit software and 32-bit device drivers starting with version 10.15 ("Catalina"). This very likely explains why Canon's software and driver support for their older scanners ended when Catalina arrived. Credit must be given to Epson for at least creating a 64-bit driver that can be used with Catalina and later versions of MacOS with Apple's Image Capture utility.

Very disappointed. 2 drivers, Scanner & Scanner2. Epson recommend that you use Scanner2, so that's the one I installed (autoinstall is a complete joke and loads lots of rubbish you're never going to use). Scanner2 won't work on windows 7 with 8gb when trying to scan 6x6, nor does it have digital ICE and the dust removal is useless.

Scanner works well and has digital ICE.

Scanning older 35mm slides (40 years old) I found that the scanner introduced artifacts that weren't in the slide. My 20 year old Nikon coolscan iv is getting past it's best but still produces pretty good results without the artifacts, it's a pity that it doesn't scan 6x6.

Lots of bugs in the software, obviously not Epsons priority to test it properly.

When initially trying to get a preview I get a message for about 20 seconds saying that the scanner isn't responding, this eventually goes away and starts the preview.

Overall impressions are very disappointing. Once I've scanned all my 6x6 I'll sell the thing.

I own/ed and used epson, hp and canon scanners. I think HP scanjet 4020 is the best in recapturing photo scan, it does a good job with negative too. Since it is old tech it scan for ever, and not sure if there are updated driver. It sit in my box on a closet since it is huge like this epson. I get my negative developed at panda lab too, but I scan my own since it would cost more. I don't shoot film anymore, so I'll leve my huge scanner in the closet.

For the WIndows 10, try this: . Delete the scanner in Device Manager > Imaging Device. Then uninstall the program and install it again from their website rather than the DVD that came with the unit. Also, you have to install the USB after the software is loaded and with the scanner power ON.

I still use my Epson Perfection 4990 Photo... transparencies up to 8x10" (usefull because I was still shooting 4x5" professionally at that time! But I use Silverfast to control the scanner... getting much more control & better results... I tried the epson software (different than what you show here, I know) when I bought the scanner... and dismissed that one very fast... I was used to Silverfast from when I still had my LaCie (AGFA ;-)) DuoScan...

I'm having trouble getting my Epson Perfection 3170 installed in Windows 11. Epson support has drivers that were updated more than 10 years ago I installed Epson Scan and did get the scanner to be recognized via a USB port (once, then it failed). I've tried to uninstall/reinstall the software with no success initializing the scanner. It's a great scanner, but the software support seems to have fallen behind the times. I installed the MS Scan software, but it too does not see the hardware plugged into the USB port. Is this planned obsolescence?--or is there a workaround?

Please use Epson Scan for Windows (i.e. not Epson Scan 2). This is the correct driver that should be used for your scanner and our website has now been updated as it was previously showing both.

I am trying to scan my art into Photoshop using an Epson Perfection V600 Photo scanner. I have had the scanner for several years and it works fine just scanning files into the computer. Just recently, I installed photoshop on my Macbook Pro. When I try to scan directly into photoshop I get a message that says "Failed to open connection to the device (-21345). See photo. I did upload the latest driver from Epson. It still says the dame thing. Does anyone know a fix for this? Thank you in advance. 006ab0faaa
