I arrived into Sri Lanka in time to celebrate avurudu, or the Sinhalese and Tamil (Hindu) new year. Apart from most of the country taking the entire week off (no traffic!!!!!), many rituals and traditions are practiced during this time. I have never done anything traditional for this celebration before, so it was nice to spend time with my grandmother and family and learn a bit more about the customs that mean so much to many Sri Lankans.

At 11:53am, we begin eating. The standard plantains are plentiful, along with sweet treats such as kokis (originally a Dutch goody), kevum (oil cake), mung kevum (rice flour, green gram flour and treacle) asmi (fried & kneaded rice flour, coconut milk and cinnamon), laddu (gram flour, rice flour, sugar, cashew, cardamom and ghee) and pasi payuru urundai (roasted coconut, treacle, sesame and rice flour). Hoping all my fellow Sri Lankans had a wonderful avurudu, with warm full bellies and happy moments with the family.
