Before you can play pool, you need to be able to set up the balls on the table. When you place the balls on the table before a game, this is referred to as racking the balls. Racking is another pool skill you need to learn and practice.

There are different styles and ways to rack pool balls depending on the pool game or billiard game being played. Each game variation can have its own specific placement and method to rack the balls. For beginners, it is ideal to learn the proper racking for several pool game variations, including straight pool, eight ball, nine ball, and ten ball.

A pool rack is an essential piece of pool equipment you need to rack the balls on the pool table. Racks can be made from different materials, such as plastic, aluminum, steel, walnut, oak, mahogany woods and even carbon fiber.

Pool racks come in two different configurations: triangle-shaped and diamond-shaped. The rack configuration you use will depend on the pool game you are playing. Pool racks are used with both pool balls and billiard balls.

Straight pool is where players agree on a number of points before the start of the game. One point is awarded for each ball sunk in a pocket on the pool table. To set up a game of straight pool, place the triangle rack on the table where the marker is located. Next, randomly place the balls inside the rack.

The order does not matter. However, some players prefer the one ball to be placed on the foot over the marker, with the five ball on the back left corner. After the initial fourteen balls are pocketed, the triangle rack is placed back on the table over the marker.

If the fifteenth ball is outside the rack, it is not re-racked. If it is inside the rack, then it is re-racked with the other fourteen balls. Continue playing and re-racking as needed until the agreed-upon point total is reached.

Place one solid ball and one striped ball in the other two corners of the triangle. The rest of the balls, except the eight ball, are placed randomly. The eight ball should be placed in the middle of the third row.

Ten ball pool uses balls numbered from one to ten. The object is to pocket the ten ball last. To rack the balls, use the triangular rack. Place the one ball at the apex over the marker on the pool table. Randomly fill in the other balls, ensuring the ten ball is in the middle of the third row.

Learning how to make a tight rack does require some practice. After you have the balls racked for the type of pool game or billiard game you are playing, carefully slide the rack forward and then backward while lining up the apex ball over the marker on the pool table.

Next, slide your fingers behind the back of the triangle rack and push the balls forward. For nine ball, slide your fingers on the bottom sides of the diamond rack while moving the balls forward. Once the balls look tight and there are no gaps in between, carefully remove your fingers. Last, very slowly remove the rack from the pool table.

Black ball is played with 15 colored object balls and the cue ball. The object balls are two groups of seven and the black ball. The player or team pocketing their group of object balls and legally pocketing the black ball wins the game. Shots are not called.

In addition to definitions defined in 8. Definitions Used in the Rules, the following definitions apply to black ball:

Free shot

After a foul has been committed the incoming player is awarded a free shot. On a free shot Rule 6.2 Wrong Ball First is suspended and the player may take the cue ball in position or in hand in baulk.

Baulk

Baulk is the rectangular area of the table that is bordered by the baulk line and the three cushions at the head of the table. The baulk line is parallel to the head rail and one fifth of the length of the playing surface away from the head cushion. For the applicable general rules, "behind the head string" should be read as "in baulk."

Snookered

A player is said to be snookered when the cue ball has no straight, direct path to hit at least part of a legal target ball. The snooker must be declared by the referee for it to be in effect.

Ball On

An object ball is said to be "on" when it is a legal target for the shooter.

The fifteen object balls include two groups of seven balls distinguished by two solid colors or by the usual pattern of numbered solids and stripes. (One through seven and nine through fifteen are the two groups.) In addition, there is a black ball or a black eight ball.

The foot spot and the baulk line should be marked.

The following rules apply to the break shot.

(a) The cue ball begins in hand in baulk.

(b) At least one ball must be pocketed or at least two object balls must cross the center string or the break shot is a foul.

(c) If the black ball is pocketed on the break, all the balls are re-racked and the same player breaks again. Any violation of 6.1 Cue Ball Scratch or off the Table or 6.5 Ball Driven off the Table is ignored on a break that pockets the black ball.

The table is said to be "open" when the players' groups have not been decided. The table is open after the break shot and remains open until the shooter pockets balls from only one group on a legal normal shot, which means not a break shot and not a free shot. The shooter is then assigned that group of balls to pocket and the opponent is assigned the other group.

The shooter remains at the table as long as he continues to legally pocket balls or the rack ends. If he fails to legally pocket a ball but commits no foul, the opponent shoots from the position left.

When the player has the cue ball in hand, he may place it by hand anywhere in baulk. The player may continue to adjust the position of the cue ball by hand until he takes a shot. The cue ball is not required to leave baulk before striking an object ball.

If the cue ball is touching an object ball, the shooter must not play the cue ball in the direction of that ball. He is considered to have hit the touching ball when he shoots away from it if the ball is on for the shot.

Object balls driven off the table are spotted on the long string. If several balls are to be spotted, they are spotted in the following order: (1) the black ball, (2) balls from the group of the next shooter, or balls from the red, blue or solid group if the table is open, (3) other balls.

Causing the cue ball to jump over any ball is a foul. (If the cue ball leaves the bed of the table and misses an object ball that would have been struck had the cue ball not left the table on an otherwise identical shot, the cue ball is deemed to have jumped over that object ball.)

The player loses the rack if he:

(a) pockets the black ball on an illegal shot;

(b) pockets the black ball on a shot that leaves any of his group of balls on the table;

(d) does not attempt to hit a ball on.

6.16 Unsportsmanlike Conduct will be penalized by loss of rack or other penalty depending on the nature of the conduct.

For that reason I usually will just concede whatever rule point isunder contention, since a contended rules means I'm playing with someone whoisn't that strong. This is especially true if you're the challenging player, since thechallenger is supposed to clarify rules before the game starts.

When your opponent is shooting, the correct place to be standing is to the side,in their peripheral vision. This lets them see that you're watching the shot,but puts you in a spot where you're not distracting them. It is extremelyrude to stand directly in the line of their shot. The best thing to do afteryour turn ends is to walk a few steps away from the table, since it ensures youwon't be obstructing your opponents' access to the cue ball.

Most bar pool tables in America are 7' coin operated tables, typically requiringfour quarters to play. Most bars will have a chalkboard somewhere on the wallnear each table. If two other people are playing a game, and you'd like to usethe table, here's what you do:

Of secondary importance is picking a cue that isn't too warped. You can checkhow warped the cue is by rolling the cue on the surface of the table. If the cueis warped, it will wobble as it rolls. This is why you should leave the rackingtriangle over the balls before selecting a cue: you want to make sure that whenyou're grabbing your cue, your opponent doesn't get over eager and break theballs, since this would prevent you from rolling the cue on the table.

For bar play, if the cue is slightly warped it usually is not a huge deal. Ifthe cue is significantly warped and you have no other options, then just makesure you know what direction it's warped in. If you align the warp directionvertically when you hold the cue, it will cause your shots to have a tiny bit ofextra back or top spin, which won't significantly affect your accuracy. If thewarp direction is horizontal, then it will cause the tip to hit the ball withEnglish (side spin), and that will affect your accuracy and can even cause youto miscue. So if the cue has significant warping, try to align the warpdirection vertically. e24fc04721
