Few dates are known for 1990. After a busy year of touring in 1989the Bee Gees this year performed publicly only for a few specialevents. During the course of the year they recorded their third andlast album for Warner Bros, documented in a tape submitted forcopyrights in December.

While this list is certain to generate some disagreements and discussion, it was meant more as a chance to recognize the great songs that have kept Prog relevant and exciting in a new era. There are thousands more that are certainly worthy, but these are the ones that percolated to the top as contenders for the best of the best.

Anathema have the ability to turn the simplest of songs into massive powerful statements. This track builds from ballad to heavy Prog epic in only the way this band can, making for one of their best tracks.

Marking the dawn of a new decade, 1990 was also the start of a new era of pop music shaped by the increasing popularity of hip-hop. Throughout the year, several R&B and hip-hop tracks sat pretty at the top of the charts, including a number of singles from Janet Jackson and Mariah Carey, who released her debut album the same year.

The track spent seven weeks at Number 1 on the Official Singles Chart between May - July that year thanks to its inclusion in the hit film Ghost. Originally a modest Number 14 hit in 1965, the big ballad by the US duo sold just under 840,000 copies to finish as the UK's best-seller of 1990, according to Official Charts Company data. A re-issue of their 1965 UK breakthrough hit You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin' was also a hit in December that year, peaking at Number 3.

The UK's second best-selling single of 1990 was Sinead O'Connor's Nothing Compares 2 U. The power ballad, famously written by Prince, held the top spot for four weeks in February (and topped charts across the world), selling 671,000 copies that year.

In third is Elton John's Sacrifice/Healing Hands double A-side (649k), the icon's first solo UK Number 1 and second overall, released to raise money for AIDS charities. Both songs had previously failed to reach the Top 40 when they were originally released in 1989, but a boost in airplay saw the reissued single take them to Number 1 for 5 weeks.

In addition to Unchained Melody, three more Number 1s in 1990 came from films and feature in the year-end chart: Maria McKee's Show Me Heaven from Days Of Thunder (6), Partners In Kryme's Turtle Power from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (13), and Kylie Minogue's Tears On My Pillow from The Deliquents (34) - the latter being the final chart-topper for producers Stock Aiten Waterman. Kylie features again at 38 with her SAW-produced Number 2 hit Better The Devil You Know.

Elsewhere, house music was on the rise in 1990, with big hits including The Power and Ooops Up by Snap!, Get Up by Belgian outfit Techtronic, and Tom's Diner by British dance act DNA featuring Suzanne Vega.

In the beginning, Ramadillo was called Straylin Street after my song of the same name. In those early days, we worked as a three-piece. Once we had enough songs to play out, we shot publicity photos and made a demo tape. Mark, who handled booking and promotion duties, handwrote each cassette and began shopping around looking for gigs at local clubs. One of the first venues that would have us was the tiny Jewel Box Theater in the back of The Rendevous, a scummy but loveable dive bar in Belltown. We built up a small but loyal following. This would turn out to be Andy Wood\u2019s final show before his tragic death at just 24 from a heroin overdose. Fun fact: Mother Love Bone\u2019s Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament went on to form a little group called Pearl Jam.

Mark recalls that after one of our first rehearsals, we brought him along to Andy Wood\u2019s memorial service at The Paramount Theater. So this would date the band\u2019s formation to the Spring of 1990, right around the time when I dropped out of Evergreen State College to focus solely on music.

As time passed, I was less and less fulfilled being in the band. I did not want to play boot-scootin\u2019 boogie music for the rest of my life. When I started bringing in more mellow material, it was not met with upbeat enthusiasm. Burned into my memory is the response one of my slower songs got. I was told, \u201CThey\u2019re gonna leave the dance floor.\u201D

"Hold On" | Wilson Phillips

When I look back to 1990, I think of that year as the "Year Of Wilson Phillips". "Hold On" would be their first release from their self-titled album in early 1990. I was in the middle of my sophomore year of high school when these very lovely ladies would begin to occupy space on the adult contemporary charts. One of my clients added this song to their wedding playlist and it was at that time I began to see what a bride and her bridesmaids might do with this song. They'll get on the dance floor and sing every lyric at the top of their lungs. "Hold On" would peak at #1 on the Hot 100 and AC chart and began a streak of platinum-selling success for Wilson Phillips.

Originally written and recorded by Prince, I was never really a fan of his version of this song. But when Sinead O'Connor seemed to come out of nowhere in the winter / spring of 1990, my ears perked up. Released in the winter of 1990, Sinead O'Connor's version would peak at #1 on the Hot 100 and Alternative chart, as well as #2 on the AC chart. The song would also hit #1 in over 15 other countries.
