This Privacy Policy explains how the Dots & Boxes mobile app ("the App", "we", "our") handles information when you use it. We built this app to work almost entirely on your device, and we've written this policy to reflect that plainly. The one exception is advertising, described below.
The App does not have user accounts and does not use its own analytics.
We — the developer — do not operate any server that the App sends your personal data to, and we do not ourselves collect or receive any information about you.
The App shows occasional interstitial (full-screen) ads served by Google AdMob. Google, as the ad provider, may collect certain device and usage data to serve and measure those ads — see "Advertising" below for details and your choices.
Your preferences (sound on/off, background theme, custom background photo) are stored only in the App's local storage on your own device.
Local network multiplayer connects your device directly to other nearby devices (peer-to-peer) — this data never passes through us or any third-party server.
We — the developer — do not collect, receive, or have access to any personal information from your use of the App. There are no sign-ups, no accounts, and no data sent to any analytics or crash-reporting service that we operate. The App does, however, display ads served by Google AdMob, a third-party service we use for monetization; see "Advertising" below for what that involves.
The App displays interstitial ads (occasional full-screen ads shown at natural breaks between games) using Google AdMob. AdMob is operated by Google, not by us, and to serve and measure ads it may collect and process data such as your advertising ID, general device information, approximate location (derived from IP address), and app interaction data, as described in Google's Privacy Policy and How Google uses information from sites or apps that use AdMob.
We do not receive or store any of the data Google collects for ad purposes — that relationship is between you, your device, and Google.
You can control ad personalization for your device (including opting out of personalized ads) in your device's Settings > Google > Ads (Android) — look for "Opt out of Ads Personalization" / "Delete advertising ID."
Ads are not shown constantly — they appear only occasionally, at the end of a completed game, so they shouldn't interrupt active play.
The App stores a small amount of data locally on your device (using standard on-device app storage), which never leaves your device and is never transmitted to us:
Sound preference — whether in-game sound effects are muted.
Background theme selection — your chosen color theme.
Custom background photo — if you choose to set a custom background image, it is stored locally on your device only. It is never uploaded anywhere.
Game settings — grid size, timer length, and player names you enter for local games.
This data is removed automatically if you uninstall the App, or you can clear it at any time via your device's app settings ("Clear storage/data").
The App offers an optional local multiplayer mode that connects two to four devices directly over the same WiFi network, using a peer-to-peer technology called WebRTC. When you use this feature:
A direct connection is established device-to-device. No game server operated by us or anyone else is involved, and no game data is routed through the internet at large.
Setting up a connection involves exchanging a short connection code between devices (via copy/paste or your device's built-in share function). This code contains only technical connection information needed to establish the link — it is not collected or stored by us.
Player names you type in and in-game moves are sent directly between the connected devices only, for the purpose of playing the game together, and are not retained after the game session ends.
The App requests the Internet permission for two purposes: (1) to establish direct peer-to-peer connections for local network multiplayer (described above), and (2) to allow Google AdMob to fetch and display ads. This permission is not used by us to send any information anywhere.
The App does not request access to your camera, contacts, location, microphone, or photo library. (If you choose to select a custom background image, your device's standard file/photo picker is used, and only the image you actively select is read — it is stored locally as described above.)
The App integrates one third-party service: Google AdMob, used to display interstitial ads as described above. The App does not integrate any analytics, crash-reporting, or tracking SDKs beyond what AdMob itself requires to function, and does not share data with any other third party.
The App does not knowingly collect any personal information from anyone, including children under 13, and has no accounts or sign-ups. If the App is used by children, please note that the advertising described above is provided by Google AdMob; if you intend this App to be directed at children, additional configuration (e.g. Google Play Families Policy compliance and AdMob's child-directed treatment settings) is required and should be reviewed separately — the default advertising setup described here assumes a general, not child-directed, audience. If you believe a child has provided personal information through the App, please contact us and we will address it, though as described above the App itself has no mechanism to collect such information.
Because all game data stays on your device (or, during multiplayer, travels directly between the devices playing together), there is no central database of user data for us to secure or that could be breached. You remain in control of your device's local storage at all times.
If this policy changes in the future — for example, if new features are added that change how data is handled — we will update this page and revise the "Last updated" date above.
