If you want a direct, factory-style replacement for a Chevrolet or GMC that prioritizes simple bolt-on functionality and corrosion resistance, choose Dorman 924-502; if you need a heavy-duty winch system with offset cable capability specifically designed to hide a spare tire under the frame of a Ford Super Duty, choose Gledewen Spare Tire Mount. This decision is not about guessing which brand is more popular, but about matching the specific mechanical requirements of your vehicle and how you intend to use it, especially when considering who might be driving it next, such as a teen driver learning to manage a larger truck.
• Dorman 924-502: Its biggest strength is being a precise, direct replacement engineered to fit select Chevrolet and GMC models with minimal modification, while its trade-off is that it serves only those specific brands and lacks the heavy-duty winch features needed for complex off-road setups. This pick is for owners of GM trucks who need a straightforward swap to restore their original lifting mechanism without adding complexity.
• Gledewen Spare Tire Mount: Its biggest strength lies in its specialized design for Ford F-Series Super Duties, offering a robust winch assembly with an offset cable to keep the tire hidden under the frame, though its trade-off is that it is strictly incompatible with any non-Ford vehicles or dual-rear-wheel configurations. This pick is ideal for Ford owners who want to maximize ground clearance and protect their spare tire from debris by stowing it securely beneath the chassis.
The Dorman 924-502 is designed with a singular, clear purpose: to act as a seamless substitute for the factory hoist on specific Chevrolet and GMC vehicles. When you look at the specifications, this part weighs just over four pounds and measures roughly 11 inches by 34 inches by 24 inches, indicating a substantial unit that fits into the space originally occupied by the OEM component. The manufacturer explicitly states that this is a direct replacement, meaning the engineering focuses on replicating the exact mounting points and operational mechanics of the stock part. If your vehicle came with a hoist system, this unit is built to slot right back in, requiring you to unbolt the old part and bolt on the new one.
For the owner of a GM truck, the primary appeal here is reliability and simplicity. The product information highlights that the hoist is specially coated to prevent future rust and corrosion, a critical feature for a component that operates in harsh environments and is often exposed to road salt and moisture. While the appearance might vary slightly from the original part, the core function remains identical, ensuring that the spare tire can be raised and lowered safely. This makes it an excellent choice for drivers who do not want to tinker with aftermarket modifications or deal with complex installation procedures. It is a "fix-it-and-forget-it" solution that restores the vehicle to its intended operating condition.
However, this part is not for everyone. If you drive a Ford, a Toyota, or any vehicle outside the specific Chevrolet and GMC models listed in the fitment data, this part will not work for you. Furthermore, if you are looking for a system that allows you to hide the tire deep under the frame using an offset cable or a crank rod mechanism, this standard hoist does not offer those advanced features. It is strictly a replacement for the existing lift system. Therefore, if you are buying this for a teen driver who needs to learn how to operate a standard, reliable hoist system on a family truck, this is likely the safest and most appropriate choice because it mimics the original equipment exactly.

The Gledewen Spare Tire Mount tells a different story entirely, focusing on the unique demands of the Ford F-Series Super Duty market. This unit is engineered specifically for the 2008 through 2016 Ford F250 and F350 Super Duty models, with a strict note that it applies to Single Rear Wheel (SRW) configurations only. It is not a generic hoist; it is a specialized winch carrier designed to replace multiple original equipment numbers, including 7C3Z1A131A, 7C3Z1A131AJ, BC3Z1A131A, and the related Dorman part number 924-539. The design philosophy here is about protection and utility, aiming to solve the common problem of where to store a fifth wheel or how to keep the spare tire safe from damage by lowering it out of the way under the frame.
What sets this mount apart is the inclusion of an offset cable system and the emphasis on a winch-style operation. The product description notes that this setup allows you to raise and lower the tire by turning a crank rod, a process described as taking approximately 30 minutes once the unit is bolted to the steel frame. This suggests a level of control and stability that goes beyond a simple chain hoist. The construction features thickened reinforcement to improve tensile strength, making it resistant to rust, damage, and deformation over a long lifespan. For anyone who drives a heavy-duty truck frequently, the ability to secure the spare tire tightly against the frame while maintaining high structural integrity is a significant advantage.
This product is best suited for Ford owners who prioritize durability and storage security. The user-friendly aspect highlighted in the data suggests it is perfect for those who are tired of crawling under the vehicle to access a loose tire or dealing with tires that hang loosely and rattle. By securing the tire under the frame, you reduce drag and protect the wheel from road hazards. However, it is crucial to note that this system requires a crank rod to operate, which is not included in the set, so buyers must account for that additional step. It is also worth noting that the warranty offers a 24-month period for carefree replacement or refund, providing peace of mind for the investment. For a teen driver operating a large Ford Super Duty, understanding how to properly engage this winch mechanism is essential, making this a tool that requires attention to detail during installation and use.
• Best for GM Owners → Dorman 924-502 is the only logical choice for Chevrolet and GMC models, as it is engineered specifically for their factory mounting points.
• Best for Ford Owners → Gledewen Spare Tire Mount is the correct selection for 2008–2016 Ford F250/F350 Super Duties, replacing specific OE numbers that the Dorman part cannot match.
• Best for Corrosion Resistance → Both products emphasize rust prevention, but Dorman uses a special coating while Gledewen relies on thickened reinforcement materials to resist damage.
• Best for Under-Frame Storage → Gledewen excels here with its offset cable and winch design, allowing the tire to be tucked away securely beneath the chassis.
• Best for Simple Replacement → Dorman 924-502 wins on simplicity, acting as a direct drop-in swap that requires no additional accessories like crank rods.
• Best for Heavy-Duty Tensile Strength → Gledewen specifies thickened reinforcement for improved tensile strength, suggesting it may handle heavier loads or rougher conditions better than a standard hoist.
• Best for Installation Clarity → Dorman emphasizes a straightforward unbolt-and-bolt process, whereas Gledewen requires bolting the winch and then managing the offset cable and crank rod.
• Best for Long-Term Warranty Security → Gledewen explicitly mentions a 24-month warranty service for replacement or refund, offering a defined safety net for the buyer.
In my opinion, if you are buying this for a teen driver who is just getting comfortable behind the wheel of a large truck, I would recommend the Dorman 924-502 for a Chevrolet or GMC owner because it mirrors the factory experience exactly, reducing the chance of confusion or improper handling. However, if you own a Ford Super Duty, there is no contest; the Gledewen Spare Tire Mount is the superior choice because its specialized winch design and offset cable provide a level of protection and storage efficiency that a standard hoist simply cannot match. The added durability of the thickened reinforcement and the ability to hide the tire under the frame make it the smarter long-term investment for Ford users who face rugged roads. Ultimately, the right choice depends entirely on whether your vehicle is a GM or a Ford, as swapping these parts between brands is impossible due to their distinct engineering targets.
No, the Dorman 924-502 is engineered exclusively for select Chevrolet and GMC models and will not fit Ford Super Duty trucks.
No, the product details specify that the crank rod required to turn the winch and raise the tire is not included in the set.
No, the fitment data clearly states that this unit is designed for Single Rear Wheel (SRW) models only.
While Dorman describes a simple bolt-on process, the Gledewen unit is estimated to take about 30 minutes to install once the winch is bolted to the frame and the cable is managed.
