Hello Kineret and Dorit!
We love you Dorit! Here are some memories of you teaching Henry and his friends at the Riverdale Y when he was in Pre-K for the special Hebrew enrichment class. Ben Greenburg - Memories of Dorit
I was so deeply saddened to hear of Dorit's passing. I was in her kindergarten class in the late 80s. I don't have a lot of specific memories of my time in her class but to quote Maya Angelou “I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” That is such a perfect way to remember Dorit because I remember feeling safe, feeling loved and feeling encouraged every day I spent with her. Her warmth was renowned in the Kinneret community and I feel so blessed to have learned with her. Although I now live in California, there was always a small part of me hoping I could send my own daughter to do Kindergarten with Dorit. I hope it is a comfort to her family to know there are generations of people who are warmer and menschier people because of Dorit. May her memory be a blessing and a comfort to all her students and her family. Baruch Dayan Emet.

Dorit Debbie Niven, May she Rest In Peace
How do I explain in words the adoration that I had for this woman.
She was a teacher for the ages. So traditional, that she was considered progressive.
Honestly, all you really needed to know, you learned in her kindergarten class. To witness her mastery in the classroom was awesome as she joyfully challenged children to get their hands dirty as they prepared a raw turkey for roasting to consume for their homemade thanksgiving feast, allowed budding architects to build with blocks ALL DAY if they wanted to, baked their own birthday cake with a few of their favorite friends and with flavors of their choice, taught them to sew their own mittens to keep little hands warm in the winter, taught these illiterate children all of the Americana songs and every holiday song in ways they would never forget, and ways that they would never learn again: through stories and sing alongs that always culminated in grand performances. Taught them about love, sharing, caring, and compassion.
As a parent, to watch this beloved master teach scores of children was an education in and of itself. I feel so fortunate that 2 of my children experienced the magic of her classroom.
With eternal devotion, respect, love, appreciation, thank you Dorit for your gifts, my heart aches for our loss, may you rest in peace, and you will always be remembered.

You have taught them through storytelling, song, dance, play, baking, counting, measuring, roasting, sewing, writing, painting, building, acting.
You have taught our children to care for each other with birthday wishes and get well cards. You have created a family in the classroom. You have strengthened their voices, their bodies and minds, and you, their beloved kindergarten teacher will forever be in their hearts.
Thank you for the patience, energy, love, and magic that you brought to the classroom each and every day and for bringing them fully to the threshold of the next stages of their lives.

Dear Dorit,
We wanted to send a note to express how much you mean to our family. It’s because of you that I knew Kinneret was the only place I’d want to send our children. On the day of Dante’s interview with Mr. Abramowitz, we sat in the chairs outside of the office waiting to be called in. He was only 3, and wouldn’t have you as a teacher for two more years, but as we sat there I heard you lead your students in making latkes for Chanukah. The air was scented with the scrumptious aroma of potatoes frying in oil and I overheard your lesson which seamlessly combined math (measurement), Judaic studies (why we eat latkes), cooperation (teaching the kids to work as a team in their latke prep). It blew my mind and I could not wait to enroll Dante. The school felt like a warm, welcoming place because of you. I hoped he would get to have you as a teacher by the time he was old enough. And my prayers were answered. I was honored to witness the extraordinary change and growth in Dante, Allegra, and Romy after their respective years with you.
For Dante, you set him on a path of academic excellence and leadership.
For Allegra, you were the key - you opened up the world to her like no other teacher had. Her pre-k year was difficult. She cried often at drop off and didn’t want to go. Somehow, your precise mix of humor, love, and academic challenge, was exactly the recipe that helped
Allegra love to come to school. Every morning she was excited to come to kindergarten and see you. I think you reminded her of her own nonna, which was just the perfect invitation for her.
For Romy, the story was more complicated. When she was 2 and we’d drop
Allegra off at K with you, she’d refuse to leave and you let her roam the classroom feeding the bunny, playing with the big kids. You didn’t just allow her to stay, you welcomed her and encouraged her to explore. I always hoped that you wouldn’t retire so that Romy would get to have you as her teacher and her Kindergarten year was your fiftieth! By the time it was her turn to start kindergarten, a fear of leaving my side had overtaken her (as it had in nursery and pre-k), but your welcome, your love, your kind cajoling helped her get over her fear and like our other kids she grew by leaps and bounds during her year with you.
You, Dorit, laid the most solid foundation for our children and we are so grateful that you are a part of our lives and their memories forever. You are the consummate educator. As you may know Nick is a deputy superintendent in the public school system. Your devotion to your students, your caring, your responsiveness to them and the warm and gentle rigor with which you led your kindergartners is something Nick often invokes as a model for the teachers and principals he oversees. You are everything a great teacher should be. We love you, Dorit!

Gary Katzman - We'll-wishes
Dear Dorit,
We were saddened to hear that you have been struggling with illness. We are all sending our well wishes and loving thoughts. We have known each other for almost half a century and you have played such a pivotal role in my development, as well as for our Childrens’, and the other Katzmans in the family!
I still remember drawing at a table in kindergarten in the old Schiff center on Valentine Avenue. I have few memories of my early years, but I have some important ones, and you feature prominently in them! I even remember an important lesson you taught me after I had damaged the artwork of a classmate. It still somehow stings, but the lesson on empathy has never left me.
I have already thanked you many times for taking such good care of our family and me, and I hope you don’t mind the repetition :-)
