This is Lincoln School, located at 907 S Wabash. It was the black school in Kirksville that Doris Akers would have attended. This school only went to 8th grade - if a black student wanted to continue his or her education, they would need to go to school in Macon, Missouri, which is 30 miles away. Doris graduated from here in 1936.
Originally the school was a wooden structure, but a brick building was built in 1914. A bond was passed to build a new brick structure for white students, and not wanting people to think the black people were treated unfairly, money was included to build them a brick school, too, which was used until desegregation happened in 1954.
