Welcome! My name is Doohyun (Richard) Sung (성두현). I am a Lecturer at Underwood International College, Yonsei University.
Research Background & Interests
I specialize in history and philosophy of science (foci: philosophy of AI; philosophy of medicine; research ethics; and social epistemology). I focus on policy issues with (meta-)philosophical implications (e.g., environmental protection; pharmaceutical regulation; and research governance). My doctoral thesis explores epistemic and institutional challenges of developing and validating research methods in data-centric toxicology.
With a Ph.D. in Science and Technology Policy, I work as a philosopher and public policy researcher; my primary sources of inspiration include (Oxford) ordinary language philosophy, (Peircean) Pragmatism, and Scholasticism ("Fides quaerens intellectum"; and "Intellectus in actu est intelligibile in actu").
I also have (semi-)intellectual interests including admiring aircraft simulators (e.g., DCS), reading about illuminated manuscripts, studying Western calligraphy (e.g., Blackletter), translating inspirational quotes, and discussing culinary history. Furthermore, I refer to my branch of intellectual service as "Armchair Force."
