Data Collection
The movie, Don’t Look Up, relates to information privacy through the themes that come from the Bash company. At one point, Marshall’s (Dr. Mindy's son) phone automatically buys DJ Chello’s latest single after Riley Bina mentions it on live television. The company and its devices collect massive amounts of data on individuals to track their interests, and buy things automatically for them.
At another point in the movies it is shown that Bash has developed algorithms that can predict an individual’s death. The Bash CEO, Peter Isherwell, reveals to Dr. Mindy that they have over 40 million data points on him alone. These data points that Bash claims to keep are fed into these algorithms which can be used to predict with 96.5% accuracy the details of a person’s death. Isherwell also tells Dr. Mindy that he knows when Mindy has colon polyps months before his doctor does. If the AI can make such advanced predictions with accuracy, then Bash clearly has enough data on individual’s to be violating their privacy.
