Figurative Artist
Donna Gray, a figurative artist based in Carmarthenshire, is known for her painted portraits. While she has primarily worked as an oil painter, Donna has recently discovered a newfound passion for clay—a medium that has allowed her to explore the complexities of human expression on a deeper level. "People have always been my most fascinating subject," she says. "When I paint or sculpt, I’m not just capturing their outward appearance; I’m delving into the spirit and emotions beneath the surface."
A significant portion of her work draws inspiration from her daughters and the way they have grown into young women. Donna is captivated by the fleeting moments and emotions that define their evolving journey, seeking to capture the unique essence of their experiences.
In her ceramic sculptures, Donna blends traditional hand-building techniques with a painterly approach to clay. Each piece is meticulously crafted using a mix of clays, ceramic fragments, and layers of glazes and slips, creating textured surfaces that reflect the depth and richness of the individuals she portrays.
The inclusion of antique ceramic shards is a recent addition to her work. Over the years, she has collected fragments from various locations, such as near rivers, and has also intentionally shattered pieces purchased from antique shops. These shards are chosen for their nostalgic significance, each one holding a personal connection to the past.
For Donna, the creative process is an intimate one—where the material and her artistic touch converge to produce works that feel alive, honest, and enduring.
