Don Gronewold

Don Gronewold was a moving force in the city of Washington, county of Tazewell and in many ways the State of Illinois.  Born in 1932 in Trivoli, IL, he married Shirley Scroggins right after Christmas in 1959.  Eager to serve his country, he enlisted in the U.S. Army after graduating from Farmington High School.

Don received his graduate degree from the University of Illinois College of Pharmacy in Chicago.  The family came to Washington, and for 42 years, he owned and operated Don’s Pharmacy.  The establishment served the community as only a small town pharmacist can do.  He could be seen in the rear of the store preparing prescriptions, but if you had a question, he was right there helping out.  He might draw a coke from the fountain or have a cup of coffee with you but when you left, your questions were answered.  Don had long standing employees who served as mentors to the high school students in his employ.  Those efforts gave many kids a hand up when they needed it most.  If you didn’t have a solid work ethic when you walked in, you did when you left to go to college.

An active Republican, Don served as Tazewell County Republican Committee treasurer for many years.  He was a member of the Rotary Club for 50 plus years as well as past president of Paul Harris Fellow with Rotary International.  Don received the Bowl of Hygeia award in 1970 which recognizes pharmacists from all over the United States who possess outstanding civic leadership qualities. He and Bob Summer instigated the Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast in 1995 to the present.  Washington was fortunate to have him as mayor from 1989 to 2001.

Don continually supported the sports teams of Washington High School and was an avid Cubs and Bears fan.

Don’s demeanor was quiet and assured.  He asked questions for a reason; not to just make conversation.  He was passionate about the truth, and what could be accomplished in the face of adversity.  His legacy and influence continues in countless forms, and Washington is proud to have had Don Gronewold as one of her finest citizens.
