Hope for Donghae Paws (HDP; 동해아이들의 희망)
Our mission is to find permanent homes in the U.S. for mixed breed, large breed, handicapped, and senior dogs with low chance of adoption at the Donghae City Shelter in Donghae, South Korea.
Donghae is a small port city located on the east coast of South Korea, a three-hour drive from Seoul. The city is surrounded by numerous small farm towns, and due to its location, most of the dogs in Donghae City Shelter are mixed-breed of various sizes.
In 2014, the number of dogs accommodated in Donghae City Shelter has exceeded the shelter’s maximum capacity. Suddenly, dogs that have stayed at the shelter for more than one year were put at high risk of euthanasia. HDP volunteer members living in the U.S. sought to save the high risk dogs, and initiated the U.S. HDP adoption campaign in July, 2014. HDP was able to bring nine dogs including two blind dogs to the U.S. by November 2014, and found “furever” homes for them.
Since our launch of the US HDP adoption campaign, we have found homes for more than 150 dogs in the U.S. It is our absolute joy to find a loving adopter who is willing to welcome a Donghae dog as a family member.
