There are a variety of reasons behind our group undertaking the IADT BLOOD DONATION AWARENESS PROJECT. In March 2018, my daughter was born with a severe case of jaundice, and required an Exchange Transfusion from the first minute she was born. Exchange Transfusion is a potentially life-saving procedure that is undertaken to counteract the effects of serious jaundice or changes in the blood. The procedure involves slowly removing a person's blood and replacing it with fresh donor blood or plasma. The later the procedure is done, the higher the life-threatening risks are. Due to an acute shortage in blood donors, my daughter was at critical life-threatening risk for more than eight hours. Thankfully, even though the procedure was delayed because of blood shortages, the Exchange Transfusion procedure was successful, and my daughter made a full recovery.
Blood shortages in Ireland
Reports from Irish Blood Transfusion Service (IBTS) suggest that the number of new donors attending clinics across the country fell by a fifth between 2010 and 2015, with a quarter fewer people aged 18 to 35 donating blood last year compared with 2010. Additionally, blood donations in Ireland have fallen 21% in five years. This downward trend continued into 2018. As a group we decided that our aim would be to increase blood donation awareness among third level students, beginning with students in IADT.
In September 2018, our group had a preliminary meeting at IBTS (Irish Blood Transfusion Service) Ireland with the Research Officer/Librarian Niamh O’Sullivan and Marketing Executive Niamh Donnelly, it was agreed that the project can be feasible and would make a great impact on third level students in relation to the blood donation awareness.
Survey-research based data, conducted at IADT Dun Laoghaire, confirmed the donation trends highlighted by IBTS. Furthermore, the survey results highlighted a lack of awareness about blood donation at third level. Fewer people aged 18 to 35 are donating blood because of lack of knowledge regarding blood donation procedures.
The nature of this project is to raise awareness for blood donations, to ultimately entice more people to donate blood, and to increase the amount of annual blood donations among Irish third level students.
