I come from a family of seven. My parents are David and Tarese and I have three brothers and two sisters. I plan to slightly follow in the footsteps of my father and older brother, but with a small twist. Both my brother and father went into the engineering spectrum with my father as electrical and my brother going into UAS, or unmanned air systems. I plan to study Computer Science at Benedictine College. Throughout high school I came upon my decision through my classes and experiences.

In high school, I have been the kind of student that works hard and always does my best. Sure, it took freshmen year for me to figure this attitude out, but I got there none the less. It didn’t matter if I loved the class or really disliked it, I always did my best to learn what I could and achieve the best grade I could. I may not be a 4.0 student, but I’ve learned that having a high GPA doesn’t mean I actually learn anything. If I spend my time just memorizing facts just for the grade, I end up losing sight of the knowledge that I’m actually in school for in the first place. Classes aren’t the only important part of high school though, all the extracurricular activities that come along with it are just as fun learning experiences.

In track and cross country, I learned the value of a team even though they are mainly individual sports. I learned that sometimes the best way to push myself to get better is to push others around me first and then, kind of like Newton’s third law of motion, the group will get better and end up pushing you. In my years of acting in plays and forensics, I have gotten better at public speaking and had a ton of fun while doing it. I gained an exorbitant amount of leadership and life lessons through my journey from Scout to Eagle Scout. Through Boy’s State, STUCO, and the other clubs, I learned about why our government is the way it is and how it works, and why it is the best government.

Even though it wasn’t till near the end of high school I learned about coding, it didn’t take long for me to find my passion in computers. When I discovered Codecademy I went through just about all of their free courses that I could. I then took a class called Web Page Design that we learned about creating web sites. In the second half of the year, our class of two took on the project of making a website for the photography class. This is not exactly my forte when it comes to coding, but it was an excellent learning experience. Since I had no experience in JavaScript, I had to learn it and also deal with all the problems that came with it. The project has taught me a lot about websites and how to manage computer files properly.
All of these experiences led me to my decision to study computer science at Benedictine. I hope to attain the degree and further my computer and coding knowledge in the computer science field. My ultimate goal is to one day become a Video Game Designer. I know that now-a-days every kid and their dog want to become a game designer and that’s why I’ve decided to start with computer science and not game design. I think that getting that computer knowledge and base while practicing game design on my own time (like my senior project) is a smarter and safer path to one day achieving my dream of becoming a Game Designer.
