Dissertation in Experimental Astrophysics: Fluorescent Aerogels for the Capture and Identification of Hypervelocity Extraterrestrial Particles
Abstract: For my dissertation, I developed calorimetric aerogels (an ultra-low density material) for the purpose of collecting and identifying interstellar dust grains in low-Earth orbit. This work involved both the synthesis of chemically doped aerogels followed by hypervelocity projectile testing, fluorescence image analysis, and theoretical modeling of shock physics in aerogels.
