At SPES we make a big deal about the South Carolina Children's Book Award Nominees. These books are great!
These are the books that we use for the Battle of the Books and we also use them for our 20 Book Challenge. Read below to find out about each of these promotions.
SPES Book Battle -- Fourth and Fifth grade students will sign up in teams of 5 during the first month of October. Each team will have a team captain, a team color, and a team name. The team captain will meet with their team and each students will accept the responsibility to read at least 4 of the books from the SC Book Award Nominee list. Of course, team members may read more of the books to give their team a better advantage. In the middle of January, teams will take a written test on the books. The 8 to 10 teams with the highest scores will play in the face to face playoffs. In prior years we had the tournament on Literacy Night at the end of January. Family members were able to watch the live games. Last year, because of COVID, we had the play at school over the News Streaming Channel. Classes were able to watch the play. Either way it is really fun! There are medals and prizes for the top teams and the first place team will face teams from other schools in the District tournament in late February or early March. Contact Mrs. Cooper at leslie_cooper@charleston.k12.sc.us for further details if you need them. If your student signs up, an information sheet will be sent home with dates.
20 Book Challenge -- Third, Fourth, and Fifth grade students can read each of the 20 books on the SC Children's Book Award Nominee list and turn in a Rave Review for each book. Each student who completes the task will be put in a drawing for an Apple iPad or iPad Mini. All Reviews must be signed by parents and must be turned in by the end of February. The drawing will be on the morning news on the Friday of Read Across America week. Students can pick up the Rave Review forms in the office or you can download it HERE and print it from home.
