John "Dok" Scott (1939-2020) was a trumpet player, composer, and endodontist who performed in Boston, Chicago, and Champaign-Urbana, IL between 1960 and 1999.
In his early college years at Grinnell College in Grinnell, Iowa, John was privileged to have briefly played with pianist Herbie Hancock's small group. He collaborated with Hancock on at least three compositions, two of which were subsequently recorded by Hancock on the Blue Note label.
While attending Berklee College of Music in Boston, he studied with educator and musician Herb Pomeroy, and attended school with such celebrated musicians as Gary Burton, Steve Marcus, and Dusko Goykovich. In addition to his studies at Berklee, his involvement in the vibrant Boston music scene included appearances with saxophonist Sam Rivers.
His travels after Berklee included time in Detroit and Chicago, after which he settled in Champaign-Urbana, Illinois, where he had a successful endodontistry practice for several years. During this time he continued to perform regularly in the community. He was an avid composer of original music and an inspiration to many aspiring local musicians who were fortunate enough to hear him play, and to perform in his ensembles.
John retired from his medical practice in 2003 and moved to Las Cruces, New Mexico, where he remained until 2009. He then returned to the Central Illinois area but had largely ended his interest in performing and composing.
John Scott passed on February 26, 2020, at the age of 81.
