Loose on a leash from an early age
A dog pulling on a leash makes every relaxed walk a test of patience. Pulling becomes even more problematic if the four-legged friend belongs to a large and heavy breed and can hardly be tamed physically because he wants to go in a different direction than the two-legged friend. Difficulties in being on the leash have their origins in puppyhood. But with know-how and a little patience, you can lay the best foundation for relaxed leash guiding here.
Two simple rules for optimal leash guidance
The basic principle of training is very simple because there are only two rules:
If the leash is on, you cannot go any further.
If the leash is loose, the dog and owner walk on together - then the puppy can suggest directions. If the line is tight again, he has to accept this.
However, these two rules must be consistently adhered to at all times. With a pulling dog, the causes of the wrongdoing are always to be found at the other end of the leash. Most of the time, the dog owner has simply not followed the simple rules consistently with the cane corso puppy and has conveyed to the puppy that he has to pull if he wants to reach a certain goal. Right from the start, your puppy should be happy to follow you wherever you go. Start the training by luring the puppy a short distance of a few meters with you - without a leash.
You can start practicing this efficient and bond-building exercise as early as eight weeks of age. If the environment offers your dog plenty of exciting stimuli that could distract him, consider using a treat or toy as a lure.
If this exercise works safely after a few days, you can do it with a leash. Important: the line always remains loose! If this also works, slowly move to lengthen the distances you cover together.
At the same time, you reduce the tempting treats and only give them sporadically for walking on a loose leash .
If this works without any problems, the basis for animal-like leash guidance is laid - puppies or sale now you should face greater challenges with your puppy. For example, a destination that you know your mate desperately wants to go there: a friendly playmate or a dog bone.
In the excitement, your four-legged friend will probably not think that the leash should actually be loose. So as soon as the line becomes taut, stop and wait. Only when it loosens again because your four-legged friend is thinking back to you do you move ahead.
No further reward is necessary, because your dog learns: "If I stick to the 'loose-leash rule', I will get to my desired goal!" This exercise can take a lot of time with some young dogs, but perseverance is worthwhile !
Practice in a quiet environment where you can stand for a long time or take small steps without feeling uncomfortable. Once your puppy has mastered this training step well a few times, there is a little more difficulty you can do:
Prevention is better than aftercare
Avoid the dangerous "exceptions" that can deviate your dog from the rule and arouse undesirable behavior. So leave him at home if you are in a hurry and don't have time to stop until the leash is loose again.
If your dog is still in a handy format, you can alternatively carry it instead of standing still. Sometimes it can also help to go backwards. As a rule, this is not necessary for puppies, but it is a useful addition for some dogs.
Tip: If you know from yourself that you are not always 100 percent consistent, practice using the harness and collar in "different roles": For example, when you go for a "collar walk", always adhere to the two rules; if the dog wears harness, allow yourself inconsistencies.
This compromise is still far better than uncontrolled exceptions, because it will teach your four-legged friend, at least in connection with the collar , how to behave on a leash.
