I needed help to cancel a transaction. the paypal employee used anydesk app to control my computer to do this. Was this OK. He was able to see all my data and my bank info. Now Im worried about being hacked. I dont have any reason not to trust him just nervous. Has anyone ever had this happen?

My mom was scammed yesterday when she tried to contact Paypal to resolve an issue. Unfortunately, when she searched for Paypal's phone number, she found a fake Paypal website and called the number listed. The fake "tech support" instructed her to download the AnyDesk app to her phone, which my mom did. She allowed access to her phone and opened her banking app under the guidance of the "tech support". The "tech support" searched for the payment app, Zelle which my mom doesn't have. At that point, my mom realized this was scam and immediately hung up and disconnected the AnyDesk session. She immediately deleted the app, froze her bank account (debit and credit cards), and disabled logins for her bank account.

Does Paypal Ask You To Download Anydesk

I fell for it.. downloaded the anydesk apps giving them remote login and to top it all off logged in to my bank via browser so they had my login info. They then asked me to go to Walmart to purchase some apple gift cards. I finally clued in and and hung up. I force stopped the app, uninstalled changed all my passwords. Don't be like me.

Thanks for the quick reply, the app was deleted as soon as the fraud was discovered, she didn't actually open up the paypal app at anytime so i assume the password has been stolen from the phone password file.

The local TV actually had a version of this same scam but with I Bank of America (I think).

Someone got notified that their bank account had been hacked through a text and to call BOA to get it fixed and put a bogus # for them to call.

Same deal, wanted them to download the "anydesk" app and when they did and it gave the scammers access to everything and the scammers drained all their money from their bank.

Since the person actually gave the scammer permission to access this, the bank won't refund their money.

I think it said they lost around $23K.

There isn't necessarily a data breach, but if you click the link they give you there probably will be. Just about everyone who has an online presence also has a Paypal account these days. They can and do send these emails to all and sundry. NEVER click a link, even if you think the email is legit. Go to your browser and log in directly to PayPal. Any legit communication will be on your account. If you don't see it there, you know the email is a scam, forward it to phishing@paypal.com and also to your country's cyber security organisation.

Phishing attacks lurking within the legitimate correspondence from familiar brands can be hard to spot. For example, Netcraft investigated the following email, sent with a from address of service@paypal.com:

I am an experienced computer technician, but I have been out of the virus cleanup arena for a while. Going by some similar forum posts found here, I am not sure that's what we're dealing with anyways. I am working on this computer as a favor to my cousin, it is her Dad's computer. About a month ago, while he was in the hospital for heart surgery, and she was remoting in (With RemotePC); the mouse suddenly started moving and proceeded to go to paypal to reset the password. She immediately cut off the computer, but after some research, found archived charges on paypal, and numerous fraudulent purchases. Yesterday, on 9/11/2020, it happened again. This time a camera phone picture was shared with me showing the somehow Anydesk was launched/downloaded/executed. They then proceeded to purchase some rugby clothing items from Diesel??? They wanted the items shipped to a California warehouse, which ships those items overseas. What a wonderful company???

There is a sophisticated phishing scam involving legitimate sites, in my case paypal, in which a bogus false charge is placed in my account (which was not in fact charged to my bank account), which generated an automated email to me from Paypal. The bogus charge said I should call a telephone number to initiate my refund. which I did. They requested information PayPal already had, asked me to check my bank account to see if the refund had appeared (it hadn't) then requested I download and run DCARE.PRO to give them remote access. In a minute or so I got blue Updating Windows screen, could not regain control from DCARE, and turned off computer. They had access to my computer, and not only viewed and accessed my bank account (no harm done) but could have downloaded saved passwords and implanted malware. DCARE should generate a warning that this is an unsafe application

Maine hosts over 1.3 million people within a granite and forest landscape. The state government employs under 100,000 individuals but does not contain fewer departments than more populous states like California.

But when I click on a "Buy now" button created with Paypal button editor - it gives two options: "Pay with my PayPal account" or "Create a PayPal account". There is no option to pay without creating a paypal account.

Working on some other paypal accounts I found out that what was told me is not always true. Sometimes payments without account creation is allowed. It depends on several factors, for example how old the business account is or how many transactions it does. I think in the end is just a matter of trustworthiness of the business account.

Now, when the customer lands on my checkout page, I display a pretty datagrid/table showing their order details and the total with shipping. When they click the "checkout with paypal" button, paypal performs an express checkout for me with the grand total, and I'm done.

Update 20200221: There are two more twists on this scam: (1) scammers are making calls from 866-292-7999, posing as "National Recovery Group" (a legit collection agency), stating that you have/had a paypal account and you owe money on an outstanding balance. They will then ask to connect to your machine and have to login to your PayPal account and/or have you go buy gift cards (Amazon, Walmart) to "pay off the debt." (2) If you search Google for "paypal contact" or "paypal technical support" (for example), you may come across pages that provide a fake PayPal phone number which is actually direct contact with PayPal scammers, such as888-221-1161.

While this campaign involved ConnectWise Control (formerly ScreenConnect), and AnyDesk, any RMM software could be used, according to CISA. RMM software typically does not trigger antivirus or antimalware defenses, making it an ideal tool for cybercriminals.

Received one of these today, still not sure if I should click cancel or just leave it sitting there annoying me forever. Although if you report it to paypal I expect they will cancel and remove it from your dashboard eventually anyway.

THE FIRST SIGNAL YOU PICK UP that John and Patrick Collison, who cofounded mobile payment phenomenon Stripe, are not big on the trappings of corporate status is a North Face backpack. Unremarkable--gray with orange tabs--it goes unnoticed by visitors as it slumps against the leg of a table a few feet from the door to Stripe's San Francisco offices. Stripes, as employees call themselves, know that the backpack means President John Collison is in the house. He doesn't have an office or even a desk, so he often works at a shared table on the ground floor--when it's available. His older brother Patrick, who is CEO, has digs that are only slightly more conventional: a small desk crammed between a wall and the desk used by the admin he shares with his brother. "It would be nice to have a place to put stuff," John says. But any desk would end up piled with it, he adds. "So it's probably for the best."
