So yeah, I've been teaching college drumlines for a long time...over 30 years. I started in the fall of 1991 at the University of Georgia as an undergraduate; one of the easiest job interviews I've ever done, tbh. In the right place at the right time, I asked my percussion professor who was going to be teaching the drumline in the fall; he didn't know, I suggested myself, and he agreed. Wow! Thank you, Dr. McCutchen!!!
Two years of teaching there (I was in no hurry to graduate), then two years at East Carolina for my Masters degree. After that I was ready to take a break, but as luck would have it I ended up at Alabama working on my doctorate...getting it paid for by teaching the drumline (for 3 years). Throw in a smattering of Drum Corps teaching ('93, '96, '97) and I had a good bit of experience before I even applied for the UAB gig.
After a brief detour to the public school ranks at Oak Grove HS ('98, '99, '00), I landed my current job (again, right place at the right time) in 2001. A few other strange detours along way (Director of Bands at OGHS and Interim DOB at UAB...twice), but they've ended up keeping me here for a while.
I still love it, and I'm so lucky to get to do what I do.
As long as they'll let me!!!
