Audio-only recordings of all four episodes have survived from this classic story, and have been used to create a brand new, fully animated story, filling the gaps alongside the original surviving Episode 3 and over five minutes of original footage from the otherwise lost Episode 4.

What is it?: This is the first serial of Season Three of the television show, though three of the four episodes are missing, so this review is mostly based upon the narrated soundtrack and the animated reconstruction.

One Minute Review: "Galaxy 4" has always been my least-favorite First Doctor serial, which is surprising, seeing as it features one of my favorite TARDIS teams. The Drahvin are the kind of reactionary sexist stereotype that often cropped up in the science fiction of the era, and on top of that, the dialogue given to them is some of the stiffest, most boring dialogue delivered by any Doctor Who villain. The only redeeming quality this serial has ever had, in my opinion, is that the Rills are slightly interesting and genuinely alien, but they feel wasted in this story. All that being said, I decided to purchase the animated recon for this review. I heard good things about it, and I hoped that it would give me a fresh perspective.

Well, the Drahvin dialogue obviously hasn't improved, but the audio is better than what was released for the narrated soundtrack. The character models for the people are just good enough, but the "Chumbley" machines are very well suited for this style of animation. It's certainly a lot more entertaining to watch them rolling about than to simply listen to their humming and beeping. Animation has also improved the look of the Drahvin and Rill spaceships, not to mention the planet itself. Probably what I enjoyed most about the whole production was the bit of "Mission to the Unknown" that features at the end. It's too bad we won't be getting that story animated.

Galaxy 4 received high viewership numbers, with an average of 9.9 million viewers across the four episodes; and the third episode became the most-viewed of the third season with 11 million viewers. Contemporary and retrospective reviews were generally positive, with praise for its concept and originality. The videotapes of the serial were wiped by the BBC in the late 1960s; the third episode was recovered in 2011, but the other three episodes remain missing. Galaxy 4 received print and audiobook adaptations, and was released on VHS and DVD with reconstructions of the missing episodes using telesnaps and off-air recordings; an animated version of the serial has also been released on DVD and Blu-ray.

The First Doctor (William Hartnell) and his companions Vicki (Maureen O'Brien), and Steven Taylor (Peter Purves) arrive on a silent planet and encounter short, blind, non-humanoid robots, dubbed "Chumblies" by Vicki. Before the trio decide whether the Chumblies are hostile, one of the robots is disabled by an all-female party of cloned blonde Drahvin warriors from the planet Drahva in the same galaxy as the silent planet, Galaxy 4. The Drahvins are dominated by their cruel leader, Maaga (Stephanie Bidmead), who treats her simple-minded subordinates with bullying contempt. The Drahvins are at war with the reptilian Rills, the masters of the Chumblies, and both races have crashed spaceships on this planet. According to the Drahvins, the planet will be destroyed in 14 planetary cycles and, with their ship irreparable, Maaga and her warriors seek to capture the Rill ship, which they believe has been made functional again. Maaga describes the Drahvins as the victims of the conflict with the Rills, but the Doctor has witnessed some of the Drahvin aggression and is not convinced. Using the TARDIS, he calculates the planet will break up in just two days' time. The Doctor tries to keep this new finding from the Drahvins, but Maaga forces the truth from him at the point of a gun.

BFI Southbank will host a special screening of all 4 episodes of the newly animated story Galaxy 4 on 7th November 2021; tickets go on sale on 16th September at 11:30 to BFI Champions and Patrons, at 12:30 to BFI Members and at 16:00 to the general public.

Since 2006, the BBC have released a variety of animations based on Doctor Who's missing episodes. This all began with Cosgrove Hall's animated reconstruction of episodes one and four of 1968's "The Invasion," which sees the Second Doctor and his companions, Jamie and Zoe, encounter the Cybermen on Earth.

Previously, these cartoons had been restricted purely to stories missing only two parts, but in 2016, this changed with the release of "The Power of the Daleks," which contained six animated episodes. The latest animated offering, recreating episodes from the 1965 serial "Galaxy 4," is set to release this November. This adventure promises to be an especially satisfying release, with many fans believing this could be the best animation yet.

During William Hartnell's three-year tenure as the First Doctor, the show was filmed exclusively in black and white. However, for the animated release, cartoon studio, Big Finish Creative, have made both black and white, and color animations of "Galaxy 4." This makes it the first time Hartnell has been portrayed in color, bar a few brief glimpses in "The Three Doctors."

Alongside the announcement of "Galaxy 4's" release, audiences were also treated to a brief trailer. This offered a small glance at the animated visuals featured in this reconstructed serial. The teaser features a vast outer space vista, occupied by a varied number of colorful worlds. The short clip ends on a shot of the TARDIS arriving on the planet Drahva, as a Chumbley emerges from behind a rocky formation.

The visuals are gorgeously realized, offering a stunning representation of scenes from this partly missing serial. With breathtaking orange hues and bright interstellar backdrops, the trailer utilizes the HD color animation style well. Added to this is the surprisingly detailed TARDIS model, and the trailer promises one of the show's most dazzling animated releases yet.

"Galaxy 4's" status as a largely missing serial may prove disappointing for many fans, but it has also led to some positive outcomes. Not only is it partly responsible for one of Doctor Who's greatest classic series memes, but it has also given Big Finish Creative the perfect opportunity to innovate on the original story. The studio has confirmed plans to evoke the 'technicolor thrills' from '60s sci-fi movies with their animated venture and create their own unique version of the live-action original.

Due to their limited resources, the '60s production team was unable to fully realize the serial's creative ambitions. However, with animation, the only limitations are the imaginative capabilities of the creative team. This means that "Galaxy 4's" untapped potential can now be fully achieved through animated techniques.

The story was released on DVD, Blu-Ray and Limited Edition Steelbook on 15 November 2021, with all four episodes animated in both black-and-white and colour, including the surviving episode three.[3] Furthermore, there was a special screening of the four animated episodes at the BFI Southbank on 7 November, followed by a Q&A attended by Peter Purves.[4]

The Doctor, his companions and the Drahvins make it to the Drahvin spaceship. Maaga listens to the Drahvins' report, and then reprimands them for the loss of the metal mesh; it was their only weapon against the Chumblies. After Maaga has dismissed the Drahvins, she addresses the Doctor and his companions. She explains that the Drahvins are a powerful race of women warriors who use men only for hunting. They were exploring in this part of the galaxy when their ship was shot down by the Rills though they managed to shoot the Rills down as well. They are desperate to get off the planet because the Rills have informed them that the planet will explode in fourteen days. Their plan is to capture the Rill ship and escape.

Now "Shada" is coming out (yes, again) as a partially animated episode with the original actors -- including Baker as the Fourth Doctor and Lalla Ward as his traveling companion Romana -- performing missing scenes the original script. The episode will use digitally remastered clips for the original sequences and fill in the details with newly acted animation.

WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for the second episode of the Doctor Who animated series Daleks!, "The Sentinel of the Fifth Galaxy," available now on YouTube.

The Doctor Who crossover Time Lord Victorious continues to expand with the Daleks! animated series. In the first episode, the aliens attacked Islos with the intent of stealing important information located inside the planet's Archive. However, the Archive's caretakers fought back by opening a portal in space and time that unleashed the Entity, an ancient alien threat from another era.

"Doctor Space" follows the misadventures of a brilliant nine-year-old doctor who runs the galaxy's first and only floating alien emergency room, Josh Selig, CEO of Little Airplane, told Xinhua on Wednesday.

Only the third episode of the four-part adventure released in 1965, Air Lock, and clips from the first episode, Four Hundred Dawns, are known to exist. An animated recreation by Big Finish Creative is possible with fan-made audio recordings of all four episodes.

The doctors are in at Prime Video. Last year, the streamer greenlit The Hospital, a star-studded adult animated comedy series starring and produced by the dynamic duo of Maya Rudolph and Natasha Lyonne, which has been in the works since 2020. Now, Collider is excited to pull back the curtain and offer an exclusive first look at the show, now titled The Second Best Hospital in the Galaxy, which sets up an exciting and potentially calamitous medical mystery in space. Additionally, we can reveal that Academy Award nominee Stephanie Hsu is joining the cast in place of Greta Lee who was previously announced in one of the lead roles. 2351a5e196
