DNSBL uses the latest version of Diamond Mind Baseball (www.diamond-mind.com), the previous year's player disk and a limited player retention format that requires mangers to "contract" up to 12 players one year in advance. It also features a minor league system where teams are allowed to protect players in their MLB team's minor league system.

Prior to 2021, DNSBL consisted of two separate leagues which were independent of each other:

- Days of Summer Baseball League was established in 1999 by Andy "Bo" Borowski and utilized MLB National League players only.
- Nights of Summary Baseball League was established in 2008 by Mark Blume and utilized MLB American League players only.
The two leagues were combined after each league's 2020 season (the "Covid Season") to form DNSBL for the 2021 season.

DNSB is not affiliated with or endorsed by Diamond Mind Baseball (DMB), Major League Baseball or the Major League Baseball Players Association. In order to assure DNSB is not in violation of DMB's copyright, each franchise owner is required to have a registered copy of the latest version of the DMB game software, and the most recent DMB issued player database installed on their computer. Annually, the Commissioner checks with DMB to ensure this legal obligation is met. www.diamond-mind.com
