What is Draw & Doodle Simulation (D&D SIM)?
D&D SIM is a zero-tech, fun, simulation-based education strategy. It uses a drawing surface (e.g., chart paper, whiteboard, digital platform) and drawing mediums (e.g., markers, digital pens) to paint a medical scenario for healthcare professionals, trainees, and first aiders to practice with, to train them before encountering a similar situation in real life!

Cool! How did D&D SIM come about?
D&D SIM was an accidental invention in the Badlands Music Festival medical tent in 2023. Dr. Anthony Seto forgot to bring his CPR manikin that he usually brings to run in-situ simulations to train his event medical team. Instead, he drew a manikin on chart paper.
Drawing out patient status updates (e.g., vitals and physical examination findings) and doodling on interventions (e.g., oxygen, IV) provided a unique and comprehensive visual representation of case progression. The chart became a useful "artwork" for scenario-end reflections and debrief. D&D SIM has no limits to creativity and what can be drawn. You don't have to worry about forgetting to bring equipment to set up a simulation experience! Simply draw and doodle, and poof, your supplies are there!
On Canada Day (July 1, 2024), we published an overview of the D&D SIM concept in the Medical Teacher journal.
D&D SIM facilitators draw out the patient's outline, vital signs, and physical examination findings. D&D SIM participants doodle on interventions such as IV, oxygen, and medications.
