Title: Knowledge-informed Machine Learning in health applications
Jing Li, Georgia Institute of Technology
Dr. Jing Li is the Virginia C. and Joseph C. Mello Chair and Professor in the H. Milton Stewart School of Industrial and Systems Engineering, and a core faculty of the Machine Learning Center at Georgia Tech. Her research interests are data fusion and machine learning intersecting with domains having complex data structures in health/medicine, manufacturing, and agriculture. Her research received various Best Paper awards from IISE, INFORMS, and medical societies. Prior to joining Georgia Tech, she was on the faculty of Arizona State University and a co-founder of the ASU-Mayo Clinic Center for Innovative Imaging. She is currently a Senior Editor for IEEE Transactions on Automation Science and Engineering and a Department Editor for IISE Transactions on Healthcare Systems Engineering. She receives funding support from NIH, NSF, DOD and industry, and is an NSF CAREER awardee. She is a fellow of IISE.
Abstract
In the rapidly evolving era of AI, does human domain knowledge still matter in driving discoveries? This talk focuses on knowledge-informed machine learning (ML) in health applications. I will begin by highlighting some key findings in our recent review paper on this topic. Then, I will present a collection of our research works that integrate domain knowledge of various forms, such as simulation models, weak labels, hierarchical relationships, qualitative descriptions, and foundation models and LLM prompting, into ML/AI model design. Our research applications span cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, neurological disorders, and dental health. I will conclude the talk by pointing out some future directions.

The 20th INFORMS Workshop on Data Mining and Decision Analytics
October 25, 2025, Atlanta, GA
Organized by INFORMS Data Mining (DM) Society
The Data Mining Society of INFORMS is organizing the 20th INFORMS Workshop on Data Mining and Decision Analytics (DMDA) on October 25, 2025, the day before the 2025 INFORMS Annual Meeting. You are cordially invited to attend the workshop and present your recent research on data mining, decision analytics, and artificial intelligence.
To participate in the workshop, a full paper must be submitted by the deadline of August 1, 2025, for consideration. All accepted papers are automatically considered for the DMDA Workshop Best Paper Competition, either in the Theoretical Track or Applied Research Track, according to the presenters' specifications. The winner and runners-up will be announced at the workshop and recommended for fast-track submission to the INFORMS Journal on Data Science (IJDS).
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
Applied Data Analytics
Machine/Deep/Reinforcement Learning Methodology
Optimization & Decision Analytics
Simulation
Bayesian Data Analysis
Statistical Inference
Ethics, Privacy, Security, and Fairness
Reliability, Quality, & Maintenance
Network, Graph, and Web Analysis
Longitudinal Data Analysis
Time Series, Spatial, & Spatiotemporal Data Analysis
Image Processing & Computer Vision
Text Mining & Natural Language Processing
Generative AI & Large Language Models
Federated & Distributed Learning
Timeline
June 1: Paper submission begins
August 1: Paper submission deadline
September 7: Final review decision
September 14: Registration deadline for the 20th INFORMS Workshop on Data Mining and Decision Analytics
Papers submission guideline
Required paper format: Maximum of 10 pages (including abstract, tables, figures, and references), 1-inch margins, 11-point font or higher, single column, single-spaced, and 50-word abstract. Note that any content after the 10th page will be removed.
Papers must be submitted via this link. Submissions must be submitted on time to be considered for review.
Submitted papers should be neither published nor accepted for publication elsewhere at the time of submission.
Participation is exclusive to members of the INFORMS Data Mining Society. Previous finalists of the DMDA Workshop Best Paper Competition must submit new work to be considered for the competition.
Papers selected as a finalist in either competition track may not simultaneously serve as finalists in other competitions at the 2025 INFORMS Annual Meeting (including those organized within DMS). If such a conflict arises, please inform the competition co-chairs (contact information is provided at the end of this document).
Finalists in either track will be recommended for fast-track submission to the INFORMS Journal on Data Science (IJDS). Details will be provided to the finalists.
Copyright: The DMDA workshop will not retain the copyright of submitted papers; therefore, the authors are free to submit their papers to other outlets. Please keep in mind, however, that fast-track submission to IJDS will be made available to finalists.
