Specifics are listed for each sport - please see below.
In general, with some exceptions listed below, I'm totally fine with low-grade cards, especially for 1950s/1960s cards. In fact, that's really the only way I've ever collected most vintage stuff.
I do stay away from cards with writing or tape/sticky residue - and also avoid cards with tears or trimming or big chunks missing.
But hard-earned signs of honest wear - rounded corners, wrinkles, moderate creasing, etc. - all are absolutely fine.

The first pack of cards I ever opened was 1975-76 Topps hockey. But it was a leftover pack at the local convenience store, which I likely acquired after the season had ended, so I didn't really get to collect that set at all - UNTIL NOW!

I collect the following APBA baseball items:
I still need many of the original APBA Red Sox and Dodgers cards/team sets from the 1950 through 1959 seasons (i.e., not the reprints, often with copyrights listed on the cards, that the company has put out since the mid-1980s - sometimes referred to as R or RR sets)
Any first-printing Great Teams of the Past (GTOP) team sets that I don't already have
APBA baseball advertising ephemera (original lineup sheets, set announcements and order forms, etc.) from 1969 and earlier
I do have multiple items in each of the above categories already - need to get a bit better organized but can definitely send a havelist upon request.
APBA items are tricky in that there are so many different printed versions of some sets that it can be hard to tell which ones fall into the categories above and which ones don't. (Often printing font is unfortunately the "easiest" way to tell!)
