Scaling, training and costs of physical computing with photonic systems
Scaling, training and costs of physical computing with photonic systems
Photonic systems for physical computing based in neural network concepts have matured in recent years and are slowly leaving the pure proof of concept stage. This leads to new challenges regarding training of such systems, the associated costs as well as how to map neural network compute units (e.g. MAC) onto the often continuous physical substrates. I will provide an overview of current approaches in the field and elaborate on our recent findings regarding challenges in training and scaling metrics.
