The Department of Library and Information Science (DLIS), established (1946) before independence and became the first department of the country to had a formal degree program in library science. It was the first Department in the whole Commonwealth countries to award the first Ph.D. degree in Library Science in 1957and was also the first in the World after the USA to had a Master’s program in Library Science in 1950.
The department was founded by the world-renowned librarian, legend, institution builder, library scholar, genius author. Accolades with colorful tributes and accomplishments such as ‘Father of Library Science in India’ Rao Saheb, First National Professor in Library Science, First Padma Shree of University of Delhi and Library Science in India, i.e., Dr. SR Ranganathan (1892-1972) and Prof. S Das Gupta (1912-1966), the then Librarian of University of Delhi.
The department has completed the 75th year of its glorious journey in higher education and research in library science. The department had produced world-class librarians, library scientists, library teachers, library educationists, and academicians. The department has a great impact on the inclusive growth and development of librarianship in India and abroad. The Department has also many milestones, notably, that it is the department of the country to had a rare distinction of Four Padma Shree, First National Tagore Fellow, and many academicians who became Vice-Chancellors and a Chief Minister.
