The Ice Cream Tour of California

I’m working on fun project I want you to know about… I’m calling it “The Ice Cream Tour of California.” 

For about 35 years, I’ve had this crazy idea that I would drive across the country or the West visit high-quality ice cream shops to sample the best. When I turned 70 this year I realized two things: First, I have time to do this -- if I focus on just California for now; and  2) it’s valuable for me (and everyone) to put some focus on things that bring joy even when times are hard and the world offers too much horrifying behavior by humans. When I reflect on my life - past and present - it’s hard to identify anything that has been a better source of frequent, small joys than ice cream.

Here’s my plan:  July is National Ice Cream Month. I’ll zip down to the far south of California at the beginning of July and then visit and sample at about 90 to 100 ice cream shops in 31 days as I work my way north.   I’ve been poking around the internet and my ice cream library to identify my likely stops.  I’ve also been consulting with a few ice cream experts (professional and otherwise).

In advance, I ask for your forgiveness if I miss your favorite.  There are just too many shops -- I’m doing the best I can!  I’ll probably comment on the ice creams I taste but this is not a competition and there won’t be any scoring – just appreciation.
