1. Position for thin-film growth
The successful candidate will employ thin film growth techniques such as pulsed laser deposition (PLD), sputter, and atomic layer deposition (ALD) to synthesize various Ionic materials (conductors/electrodes). Target applications of Ionic materials will be selected among fuel cell, rechargeable battery, and electronics depending on a project theme and the applicant's interest. Once a system is synthesized, electrochemical (electrical) properties will be estimated with various characterization tools including X-ray diffraction, spectroscopy, transport measurements, scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM). Comprehensive characterizations will be combined to develop novel characteristics of a synthesized system. The ultimate goal of this project is to construct exotic Ionic behaviors and their theory that can suggest novel devices. The position requires:
Experienced skill at PLD, Sputter, or ALD,
Fabrication skills to test transport properties of thin films, experience on transport measurements (Ionic or Electronic)
Adequate understanding of materials science (or physics, chemistry), thermodynamics, electrochemistry, other common materials synthesis procedures,
Self-motivation, good communication, and Team working skills.
Experience in the following areas is a plus:
Background in physics, materials science, or chemistry-related fields.
Familiarity with Ionic technologies including fuel cell, rechargeable battery, or electronics
Familiarity with a rechargeable battery.
2. Position for Transmission electron microscope (TEM) characterizations
The successful candidate will characterize the Ionic systems developed by our or collaborating groups. The applicant may select target applications among fuel cell, rechargeable battery, and electronics depending on a project theme and interest. Strong TEM facility setup at KIST will be employed, but also other various instruments scattered in Seoul and other cities can be used. In-situ techniques (e.g., biasing, heating, gas flowing) can be applied to visualize and characterize dynamics at a selected system. The candidate will set up and develop further one of the in-situ methodologies. Meanwhile, various TEM characterization approaches will be combined together to decipher a target subject. This position will collaborate closely with the growth team to achieve our team goal. The ultimate goal of this project is to construct exotic Ionic behaviors and establish fundamental design rules. The position requires:
Ph. D. at TEM, (for a student who has an interest in atomic structure characterizations)
Adequate understanding of crystallography and materials structures, phase diagrams, and thermodynamics,
Self-motivation, good communication, and Team working skills.
Experience in the following areas is a plus:
Background in physics, materials science, or chemistry-related fields.
Experienced in In-situ TEM experiments
Experienced in transport measurements (Ionic or Electronic)
Familiarity with Ionic technologies including fuel cell, rechargeable battery, or electronics
3. Synthesis project
The successful candidate will synthesize novel cathodes and solid conductors for rechargeable batteries applying powder-based synthesis. Electrochemical performances and structures will be tested with various tools. Strong facility setup at KIST will be employed. Also, the candidate will collaborate closely with the characterization team. The ultimate goal of this project is to develop Ionic materials for an outperforming rechargeable battery. The position requires:
Background in physics, materials science, or chemistry-related fields.
Adequate understanding of materials science (or physics, chemistry), thermodynamics, electrochemistry, other common materials synthesis
Self-motivation, good communication, and Team working skills.
Experience in the following areas is a plus:
Experienced in synthesis procedures
Experienced in various characterizations such as XRD, SEM and etc.,
Familiarity with a rechargeable battery.
Please send applications to dkwon at kist.re.kr with your CV and cover letter, demonstrating your background and motivation.
For a student, there will be an opportunity to get a Ph. D. (or integrated course) degree from Seoul National Univ., Korea Univ., etc., which will be dependent on the capabilities of an applicant and openings.
