djp terrariums

djp terrariums are self-sustaining mini ecosystems hand crafted by Industrial Design student Dylan JP LaPlaca. Each terrarium will self-water and maintain its life indefinitely in low to moderate sunlight.

The Ecosystem

Each ecosystem contains three layers of substrate supporting the enduring growth of the root structures. The bottommost layer is composed of rocks for water retention. The middle layer contains screening, charcoal and perlite which create a natural barrier from the water below thereby removing the risk of root rot. Meanwhile the topmost layer contains enriched soil with the addition of compost and earthworm castings to support the continued growth of each moss, fern and plant.

Additionally, plant groupings have been thoughtfully handpicked for the size of the container.

The Containers

Each container has been locally sourced from Connecticut antique stores and flea markets leading to a variety of terrarium sizes, shapes and colors.

Care

Closed terrariums - Terrariums with closed tops should be opened once a week to release excess moisture.

Open terrariums -  Terrariums that are always open may need occasional water added. If your terrarium looks dry, add 1/4 cup of lukewarm spring water.
