Staff are exposed to radiation in the scanning room when assisting with CT scans of patients requiring ventilatory support during procedures. We measured lens doses using a phantom during a high-energy trauma protocol. Dosimetry showed that the unprotected lens received 2.02 mGy on the right and 1.91 mGy on the left, which are not negligible doses. Respective exposures to the right and left lens were 53.6% and 55.1% when wearing 0.07 mm Pb protective glasses with side covers; 53.7% and 64.2% when wearing 0.7 mm Pb glasses without side covers when facing away from the patient couch; and 92.1% and 91.2% using protective shielding in the gantry. Since the face direction may change during assistance with CT imaging, it is desirable that the protective glasses have a shape with a side cover. The protective shielding had a major radiation reduction effect, although it is expensive to acquire, install, and maintain.

I was pleased to read in Yale Medicine that Donald Berwick, M.D., was the Commencement speaker last year. The article reminded me that Don was considered a phantom member of our Class of 1972. Apparently he enrolled at Yale but belatedly decided to attend Harvard Medical School. For whatever reason, this news apparently did not prevent him from having a place at a cadaver or from having a designated place and materials in every laboratory and small-group session. To my recollection, this practice continued well into our second year. The joke was that with the Yale system as it was, he could earn an M.D. from both Yale and Harvard. It is fitting that Don finally did make it down to the Yale medical campus.

Within the Lower Saxony Research Network Design of Environments for Ageing (GAL), a personal activity and household assistant (PAHA), an ambient reminder system, has been developed. One of its central output modality to interact with the user is sound. The study presented here evaluated three different system technologies for sound reproduction using up to five loudspeakers, including the "phantom source" concept. Moreover, a technology for hearing loss compensation for the mostly older users of the PAHA was implemented and evaluated. Evaluation experiments with 21 normal hearing and hearing impaired test subjects were carried out. The results show that after direct comparison of the sound presentation concepts, the presentation by the single TV speaker was most preferred, whereas the phantom source concept got the highest acceptance ratings as far as the general concept is concerned. The localization accuracy of the phantom source concept was good as long as the exact listening position was known to the algorithm and speech stimuli were used. Most subjects preferred the original signals over the pre-processed, dynamic-compressed signals, although processed speech was often described as being clearer.
