MAKING A DIFFERENCE WITH ART

MEET BARRY STICKY

Barry Sticky is the ethereal blue scamp who can't stay out of the glitter honey. We were one of 15 artists chosen to paint a fiberglass bear cub to be displayed on the grounds of the Colorado Chautauqua in Boulder for WinterFest 2020: Art in the Park. Barry and his friends will be auctioned off with proceeds benefitting Blue Sky Bridge, a local nonprofit focused on fostering safe communities for children and justice to end child abuse.

About Our Process

When we received our unpainted cub, we considered his stance and facial expression first. We decided to use our favorite turquoise/pthalo blue/violet palette for the gradient color field from head to toe. Then we dripped epoxy resin all over him as if he had knocked down a beehive and gotten it everywhere! That was when we just KNEW his name had to be "Barry Sticky." Just before the "honey" set completely, we brushed in large flakes of gold leaf to give him the DJC Murals signature sparkle that we add to every piece we create.

This project was an enjoyable challenge as we haven't yet painted on a 3D object as a crew before. The concept came together very quickly and the execution of the epoxy resin "honey" with our cold weather was a little tricky. But a shed with a portable heater gave us the climate-controlled space we needed to cure and set the resin.

We are a crew rooted in Colorado and we know what a special place this is. The entire ecosystem from the bears to the bees is important and deserving of our stewardship. We hope Barry Sticky will help remind us that we all have a responsibility to protect and preserve this paradise we get to live in.
