Every once in a while, I encounter a topic that seems to garner a fairly strong consensus of opinion but about which I disagree. My opinion on the use of the selection of song keys and the use of two-octave worship songs seems to be one of those right now.

In a Church culture in which personal engagement with the Bible is sometimes patchy, worship songs and hymns become a primary source of theology for some. For others it is the most dynamic tool in terms of connecting with God. We pick up memorable bits of scripture (often a bit mangled to fit the verse structure), and larger principles about God through the lyrics of our Sunday anthems. So the accuracy of their theology really matters.

While this end-times picture is technically found in the Bible (1 Thessalonians 4:17), there are questions over whether it is meant to be understood in a literal sense. Either way, this song is definitely primed to confuse any visitors among us.

Imagine for a moment (if this doesn't already apply to you) that standing up is an issue for you. Perhaps you're elderly; perhaps you're wheelchair-bound. You're already fairly alienated by the service leader's repeated requests to stand up, but now the worship songs themselves are asking the same impossible thing.

At youth events such as Soul Survivor, where it was originally popularised, this song has often produced an explosion of joy. Teenagers would throw themselves around in the manner of David, who danced outrageously in loose-fitting clothing (to the disgust of his wife Michal in 2 Samuel 6).

Many of us struggle with songs such as this. What exactly are we supposed to do? Do we take the lyrics literally and move our bodies in the way described, like some sort of action song for adults? Or do we see the whole thing as a metaphor? Whichever we choose, there may be a sense of discomfort.

On the whole, Christian songwriters do an excellent job and it is impossible to measure the positive impact that many of our worship anthems have had on worshippers on British soil and beyond. Sadly for the egos of most preachers, the average Chris Tomlin chorus is a lot more memorable than the average sermon.

Before I came to Baylor, my vocabulary had not even included names like Chris Renzema, Hillsong and Elevation Worship. I had never listened to modern worship music, let alone witnessed the full show of hand-raising and guitar-strumming that often accompanied it.

Our faith is an opportunity to transcend this world and get a glimpse of the heavenly banquet that awaits us. But to make use of this opportunity, we must quiet ourselves in peaceful contemplation. We must remember that Christians have been practicing for 2,000 years, and that many traditional hymns are rooted in this rich, longstanding history. We must abandon contemporary frivolities that disrupt sacred celebrations.

Historically, many of the more liturgical denominations like my own spend musical energy on the use of more classically driven expressions of music. This means that for those songwriters who write contemporary music in these traditions, there is not always widespread support, financially or otherwise. In fact, I have even faced direct discouragement from creating any sort of modern expression of worship, even songs based on hymnody. This leaves it to the larger CCM artists to provide the bulk of what is widely available for use in contemporary worship on any given Sunday.

The focus for many churches is not on performance, and this is largely true for 1517 Music as well. Our focus is on congregational singing and creating theologically rich songs. We believe you can have both regardless of what style of music you choose. The only way to change the current state of worship songwriting and production is to create something different.

I want to leave you with one final thought: How would Christendom be different had we decided that because the printing press was such an influential tool, and the prints were so beautiful, we should not use the computer? The very site you are reading this on would not exist. How we convey these ideas has little at all to do with the content of the writing, however, it does greatly affect how it is accessed. This is not an argument for discontinuing the use of the organ or other types of classical instruments, but rather, a suggestion that we should expect worship songs to continue to sound the same and continue to lack theological depth unless more churches are willing to encourage and financially support the efforts of songwriters to create music written from and for their congregations.

GORDON: I think this is a conscience issue. The last thing we want to do is sing heresy back to the Lord. The last thing we want to do is sing falsehood. We should have a measure of trust in our leadership to oversee the music that is being sung. The problem today is that typically, the worship team makes the decision on what to sing. Sometimes the pastor might be involved, but often there are no checks at all regarding music choice. That can be incredibly harmful to the congregation.

My approach would be to talk to the leadership, especially if there is a statement of faith, and be a good Berean regarding the music you sing. Is it in accord with Scripture? Is it truth? Kindly express your concerns to your leadership such that they oversee music in a way that is helpful to the entire congregation. This question exposes what often happens in modern worship: there is no oversight of what is being done.

Personally, once the pandemic started, I listened to worship music constantly, because I missed these gatherings. Therefore, with one song after another stacking up into hours of mindless listening, the music slowly became noise. I was listening to worship music not to draw close to God, but to relive these congregational experiences that are now of the past.

All of these are legitimate reasons to stop singing music from these groups. But they are not the most important reason you should stop. The biggest reason you should stop singing songs from Hillsong, Bethel, Jesus Culture, and Elevation is that their music embodies a false theology of worship.

All of the groups under consideration here teach and practice a Pentecostal theology of worship. Pentecostalism emerged in the early twentieth century, combining the Methodist holiness movement and revivalism with a conviction that the miraculous signs of the apostolic era continue today.

Pentecostalism shifted the emphasis for corporate worship from covenant renewal to authentic emotional experience. And this theology did not stay only in Pentecostal churches. Worship that embodies Pentecostal theology began to introduce embodied Pentecostalism into broader evangelicalism, primarily through its music.
