Kent was born in Minneapolis on July 12th, 1965, the middle of three children born to Bud and Jane Schoening. He fell in love with fishing and music early, despite the fact that the only record available on his first fishing trip was The Carpenters: Close to You. Kent survived that trauma to form five bands during his life, one of them named Pocket Fisherman, and the last, The Pedestrians, was talented enough to record three albums and receive regional recognition. All this time Kent was following his love of the outdoors by going to school first in Eugene, Oregon, then Santa Barbara, and finally Wisconsin, where he received his degree from UW Madison in 1989. He continued to travel far and wide by living in New York, San Francisco, Minneapolis, and Portland.

Kent passed to eternal life on July 12th, exactly 55 years after he was born. He was ready to be free of a body that had become heavy due to a brave struggle with a rare neurological disease called Multiple Systems Atrophy (MSA). He is preceded in death by his grandparents, Harry & Louise Schoening, as well as Carl & Jordis Balfany; his father, Bud Schoening; and his uncles Bill and Bob Schoening. He is survived by his wife Melody Altstadt; his stepson Axel; his mother, Jane Schoening; his brother, Mark (Stephanie) Schoening; his sister, Christy Clay; and his niece and nephews: Alex, Hunter, Zach and Ethan. A service will be held for Kent in Oregon in September to celebrate his life.

I bought the album in a record shop in Botanic Avenue, Belfast, a kind of arterial front line that separated the more genteel streets around the university and the botanic gardens from the uncharted seedier district that led down to the Ormeau baths. An area which our middle-class gang of party-seekers would penetrate at times to get drunk on Dick Turpin wine at a hostelry of ill-repute that sold 'Double Dicks' for very little money.

In fact, I didn't really buy the album. Being the oldest sibling, I somehow persuaded my younger brother to spend 2.20 of his pocket money on it, probably to keep me quiet. When he copied it by aid of microphone onto an early cassette tape and laboriously reproduced by hand the phantasmagorical cover in miniature, the record kind of seceded into my embryonic collection. I hope I did the decent thing and transferred some money from my pocket-money account into his by way of the ledger that our father placed in my safe-keeping. An arcane system reliant on trust and honesty.

Joanie: About 8 years ago, I was reading an article about Christmas music and discovered that many of the most well-known Christmas classics are actually written by Jewish songwriters. I was very surprised at first but once I learned of the rampant antisemitism in every other industry at the turn of the century, it started to make sense that these songs were written out of necessity to survive in America and assimilate patriotically. The music industry and entertainment industry was not seen as glamorous nor a desirable line of work back then.

As a Jewish songwriter, I was instantly fascinated and wanted to create a collection of some of these songs but when remaking them it was important to me to make them different from anything anyone has heard from these classics. Those who know me know I love a good concept album with a twist!

Did you find out more about the Jewish songwriters behind these Christmas songs as you were recording this album? Any favorite stories about them? Any song that you were particularly surprised to discover was written by a Jewish songwriter?

Joanie: For Christmas celebrators, I hope Oy Vey! Another Christmas Album becomes the new favorite Christmas album that the whole family can enjoy together. And for Jewish folx who feel a little guilty indulging in Christmas tunes, NO NEED! These songs are kosher!

At 4 p.m. on Oct. 21st, I was in the basement of the Tribeca Target for four hours, waiting for Taylor Swift to show up. The night before, Swift released her highly anticipated 10th studio album, Midnights, and my friends and I were up until well past 3 a.m. listening to the new music together.

For Midnights release week, I had the advantage of already living in New York. One of my friends from D.C. came to stay with me and we hosted a small listening party at my apartment for the album. Our plan for the weekend was to meet up with other Swifties in Central Park and go to brunch together, as well as hunt for some signed vinyls at indie record stores and take pictures by the Midnights billboard in Times Square. Of course, we also planned on going to Target to buy the album.
