How long have you been playing the piano, and do you play other instruments as well?

I started to have classical piano lessons at the age of nine and never stopped playing since then. Piano is the only instrument I play.

How long have you been making piano music?

I started to compose my own tunes since the second year I was taking my classical piano lessons, it was a kind of relaxing moment since I really took the piano lessons seriously and studied it about two/three hours per day, almost everyday.

Tell us something about that moment you realised you could make songs yourself!

It came spontaneously after I started to learn classical piano. No effort, no tension. I got two passions from playing the piano at that time: learning pieces from Liszt and Chopin (in time) and composing.

Born in 2003 into a family of musicians in Los Angeles, California, Angel S. Wang began studying the piano at the age of five under the guidance of his mother. Today, he is a student at the P.I. Tchaikovsky Moscow State Conservatory, where he studies with Professor Natalia Trull.

Furthermore, Angel S. Wang has participated in various international piano projects and festivals, including the International Piano Project "Pianissimo" (Russia), Rheingau Musik Festival (Germany), American Fine Arts Festival (USA), Rafael Orozco Piano Festival (Spain), beda International Music Festival (Spain), and ArsLonga Music Festival (Moscow, Russia).

Taborn had been speaking to producer Manfred Eicher about recording his trio, but coordinating the schedules of everyone required was proving difficult. A week after Taborn had completed a solo piano tour of Europe, Eicher suggested that he record a solo album; Taborn "was ready at that point: shedding for hours a day, just practicing and playing exercises to prepare". For a week before the recording, he had been teaching children jazz in Switzerland; then, after a solo concert, Taborn remembers, "I was driven to Lugano, arriving at like 2 a.m. I was tired the next day going into the studio".[8] Once there, he was determined to record something individual, instead of sounding similar to other solo jazz piano projects.[9]

The album was recorded in a Radiotelevisione svizzera studio in Lugano, Switzerland.[10] The piano was a Steinway concert grand model D.[10] Asked how much of the album was improvised, Taborn replied that, "I would say 90 percent. A couple of the more rhythmic, long-cycle things were preconceptualized."[11] Although two days were available in which to record, a total of 33 or 34 pieces for possible inclusion were recorded on the first day, and on the second Taborn told producer Manfred Eicher, "I think we're good, let's just start listening."[11] The only pre-existing composition on the album is "Over the Water", which featured on Taborn's first album as leader, Craig Taborn Trio.[12]

Taborn's comment on solo piano performance, including for this album, was that "I'm really listening intensely to these very subtle nuances of the sound in the piano. I'm even hearing the three different strings on each note, how they resonate and how the beats work. I wanted to find a way to document that, which can be tricky."[9]

The Los Angeles Times hailed the uniqueness of the record as "unlike any other of its kind. Often hushed and spacious where many musicians will opt for a maximalist approach, Avenging Angel specializes in building a contemplative atmosphere all its own."[14] The AllMusic review by Thom Jurek awarded the album 4 stars, stating "Avenging Angel is not an intellectual exercise, it is a major contribution to the actual language of the piano as an improvisational instrument: its 13 pieces feel like a suite: seamless, economical, original, and visionary."[2]

Slate jazz critic Seth Colter Walls nominated the album as a new classic, writing, "Avenging Angel doesn't just seem like an 'album of the year' candidate, but something destined to have one of those 'crown' icons next to its four-star rating in the 30th Penguin Guide to Jazz, however many years from now."[15] The album was placed 30th in Down Beat's Critics Poll jazz album of the year list in 2012.[16] In 2012 the album was also nominated by the Jazz Journalists Association for their award Record of the Year.[17] In 2017, The New York Times' Adam Shatz commented that "'Avenging Angel' is now seen as a benchmark of solo jazz piano".[18]

The short-skirt angel on the piano is made from various local woods and goes through a complex manufacturing process of around 135 steps. Each of these steps is carried out with the utmost care and attention to detail to ensure that each angel is a unique work of art.

With a short-skirt angel with djembe from Blank, you are not only bringing an artistic piece of craftsmanship into your home, but also a piece of Erzgebirge tradition and joy. Experience the timeless beauty and uniqueness of these angels and add a festive touch and a touch of elegance to your decoration.

This gentle five minute memorial was commissioned by flutist Ray-Micheal Kauffman in remembrance of his mother, who was very much a snow-loving angel. Its tender dialog is preceded by three rings on a triangle played by the flutist, and is concludes with three poignant triangle strokes played by the pianist (or heard from offstage).

Let this song remind you how God can take something ordinary and do extraordinary things with it! Think back to that day when He chose an ordinary young girl to bring an extraordinary Messiah into this world. Look back at the wonder of the star the wise men followed. Picture the awe the shepherds must have felt as the angels appeared in the heavens, singing their praise to the newborn King.

Program Note:

I composed The Best Angel in Heaven  in the cruel month of April 2020, in memory of Sandra Santos-Vizcaino, the wonderful third-grade teacher at PS 9 in Brooklyn, NY who passed away from Covid-19. I did so because I was so touched by the memory page devoted to her, marked by the love and sadness of so many whose lives she touched. She was clearly not only a great teacher but a woman of extraordinary character, kindness, and compassion. I wish I could have known her. I created the lyrics based on phrases drawn from the memories of love for her and of distress at losing so dear a person. The music is available for SS choir, unison treble choir, or soprano, and piano. -JS

Gabriel's Message: "The Angel Gabriel from heaven came" is a Christmas song that is almost unknown. Yet it is incredibly lovely! Listen to a piano arrangement in Am, borrowed from my other website.

This free online Christmas music for a capella singers "Gabriel's Message" is a haunting and very beautiful old carol. Also check out my link below to access a very pretty piano arrangement.

This beautiful song book for piano & voice "Esther, For Such a Time as This", tag_hash_110_______________________________, tells the riveting story of the time when Jews in ancient Persia faced a foe named Haman, and how a brave young queen risked her life to save her people.

And when they start reading white-key notes on the staff, this is a fun easy resource to say each week, "Choose a new black-key song at home this week and figure it out to show me next lesson!" They will be spending more time at the piano.
