This course offers personalized one-on-one instruction on the yangqin, focusing on developing strong foundational technique, musical expression, and repertoire. In addition to traditional training, students explore creative improvisation, learning how to shape musical ideas freely and confidently. Lessons are tailored to each student’s level and interests, supporting both artistic growth and personal creativity.
This course is designed for musicians who wish to expand their artistic practice by engaging deeply with the traditions, aesthetics, and historical development of Chinese music. Through an exploration of major musical genres, regional styles, instrument families, and influential historical periods, participants gain a comprehensive understanding of how Chinese music has evolved and how it continues to shape contemporary artistic expression.
The course combines lectures, traditional music score learning, guided listening, hands-on demonstrations, and discussions on cultural context, allowing musicians from diverse backgrounds to meaningfully connect Chinese musical concepts with their own creative work. Whether you aim to incorporate new sonic elements into your practice, music creation, collaborate across cultures, or enrich your residency portfolio, this class offers both foundational knowledge and space for artistic exploration.
This ensemble-based course is designed to strengthen core musicianship skills while fostering creativity and collaborative expression. The first portion of each class focuses on structured musicianship training, including rhythmic exercises, active listening, ear training, and foundational compositional strategies. Students build the tools needed to respond musically with confidence and clarity.
In the second half of the class, participants engage in free improvisation as an ensemble, applying newly developed skills in an open, exploratory setting. Through guided prompts, group interaction, and creative experimentation, students learn to communicate musically, take artistic risks, and develop their own improvisational voice.
Ideal for musicians from all backgrounds, this class nurtures both technical growth and artistic freedom within a supportive group environment.
This course integrates Dalcroze Eurhythmics with principles from Traditional East Asian Medicine, particularly the Five Elements framework, to explore the therapeutic relationship between music, movement, and physical and emotional well-being. Students engage in rhythmic training, sensory–motor exercises, improvisation, and elemental-based movement sequences that promote neurological development, motor coordination, rehabilitation, and psychological resilience. Emphasis is placed on training the mind–body connection, enhancing emotional regulation, and fostering social bonding through collaborative activities. This course is suitable for learners seeking both artistic growth and wellness-oriented benefits.
