Keeping Cats and Dogs Happy at Home
Being a pet parent is one of life’s greatest joys—and let’s be honest, it can be a little messy too! Just like us, our furry family members need love, care, enrichment, and a little pampering now and then. Here are realistic, budget-friendly ways to care for your pets at home, plus when to call in the pros.
1. Nail Trimming at Home:
For Dogs: Use a clipper designed for dog nails or a pet nail grinder. Look for the clear/white part of the nail and avoid the quick (that darker pink area). Trim small bits at a time.
For Cats: Cat-specific nail clippers are best. Gently press their paw to expose claws and trim just the tip. Have treats on hand!
DIY Tip: Try during nap time or when they’re calm. Use a towel wrap for squirmy pets.
When to Call a Pro: If your pet hates nail trims, has dark nails, or you’re unsure where to clip.
2. Brushing & Bathing:
Brush weekly (or more, depending on breed). A rubber curry brush works well for short hair, and a slicker brush for long hair.
Bathe dogs monthly using gentle pet shampoo. For cats? A damp cloth wipe-down usually does the trick.

Daily walks are essential. Mix it up with different routes or dog parks.
DIY games like fetch in the yard, tug-of-war, or hiding treats under cups for a mini “shell game.”
2. Cats:
Laser pointers, feather wands, or crinkle balls are great ways to mimic hunting instincts.
Cat trees or wall-mounted shelves let them climb and perch.
Scratching posts or cardboard scratchers save your furniture. Sprinkle with catnip to make them irresistible.

Hide treats around the house or in treat-dispensing toys. Start easy and gradually make it trickier!
2. Puzzle Toys:
Use muffin tins with tennis balls on top, or make DIY treat puzzles from cardboard tubes.
3. Training Time:
Teach a new trick or command! It builds trust and burns energy.
4. Rotation of Toys:
Don’t leave all the toys out at once. Rotate them weekly to keep interest high.
Some things are best left to the experts, and that’s okay!
Dental Cleanings: Especially for dogs—bad breath can signal infection.
Haircuts: Long-haired pets (like doodles or Persian cats) often need professional grooming.
Behavior Help: If you notice aggression, anxiety, or major behavior changes.
Vet Visits: For vaccinations, illness, or anything you’re unsure about.
DIY pet care doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive. What our pets really want is our time, attention, and a little consistency. Whether it's playing chase with a laser pointer, hiding snacks in their favorite toy, or just curling up for a snuggle—you're doing great.
