DIY or Do-it-Yourself is explained by Knobel and Lankshear as the term given to activities of undertaking maintenance, restoration or modification work on some major investment items like homes or vehicles without being specialized or trained or having the expertise required with that work. Individuals believed that they can avoid or reduce the financial cost of professionals or specialized personnel to do that kind of maintenance work.
The three main elements required to perform DIY projects are tasks, tools and knowledge.
Tools and knowledge started to become more available in the mid-1950s allowing more people to accomplish the desired DIY projects at affordable costs.
& History of DIY &
Joseph Moxon, a famous British hydrographer, publisher and instrument-maker, published Mechanick Exercises in 1683. This book, of great importance, is the earliest among all modern DIY manuals and provides accurate accounts of crafts, including smithing, woodworking, engraving, instrument-making and printing (Biography of Joseph Moxon, n.d.).
Mary Isabella Oliver-Gascoigne published Handbook of Turning in 1842, encouraging women to use the lathe for beautiful decorative work and convincing them that they could be proficient without being too masculine and laborious (Ornamental Turning - Victorian Era Turner: Mary Isabella Oliver-Gascoigne, n.d.).
The 19th century’s “help yourself” moral incentive and the 20th century’s life difficulties and wars encouraged and promoted DIY more. Furthermore, many wartime slogans during WW II illustrated the importance of self-reliance and practical work(Leahy, 2018).
New media fueled the surge in DIY from the 1950s onwards. The DIY expert Barry Bucknell helped to convert DIY into a popular pastime through his TV series Bucknell’s House, which shows how to modernize old houses. Following his step, various TV shows developed in this genre (First Episode of Bucknell’s House, n.d.).
Today, DIY learning is ubiquitous with mobile technologies. People can learn anything they are interested in anywhere and anytime. Moreover, the requirement of users’ skill levels has been reduced recently in the DIY trend. We only need to assemble the flatpack furniture by tightening some screws or making a meal with ready-made sauces and ingredients. This trend will further encourage more people to engage in DIY learning.
& Why DIY? &
Consumer involvement is important in the economic marketplace based on the marketing theory. Therefore, marketers encourage and promote the prosumption activities (both production and consumption) from consumers (Wolf & McQuitty, 2011). DIY is one specific form of prosumption that people are familiar with.
According to Wolf & McQuitty (2011), a feeling of happiness and achievement emerges after engaging in or accomplishing DIY activities. These enhancements of identity motivate the future undertaking of DIY projects.
DIY activities encourage people to work with their hands and move their bodies. Activities that require some physicality are good for the body and mind.
DIY is a straightforward way to learn new things. As DIYers acquire new skills, they increase their confidence and expand their knowledge bases (Mosier, 2021).
Engaging in DIY projects helps to illuminate self-discovery and increase self-reliance. During DIY-ing, people discover what matters most and become more independent with their growing skills and knowledge.
Other benefits include but not limited to:
Saving money
Convenient completion times
Having it done the way you want
Spending time doing fun and useful activities. During the Covid-19 pandemic ….
Many of us are progressively aware of the great potential that handheld computers and mobile communications devices have on education and learning. Moreover, the number of studies, researchers, trials and pilots exploring this phenomenon has drastically increased across various settings and fields. ِThus, the abundance of free multimedia elements (text, images, music and videos) and the increasing affordability of computers, digital devices and video cameras and their availability in public libraries and community centers resulted in making it possible for people to become DIY media makers and producers.
Whether a DIY consumer or producer, you will position yourself differently based on your mobile learning experience. What were your motives, how and where did you find a sufficient DIY tutorial or tutorial-making tools, and how clear and easy was the guide?
As DIY knowledge resources become abundantly spread and highly sophisticated, nearly anything that comes to your mind that you need to learn about is available in many ways, and you will find somebody who thought about it before you. You will also find creative ideas that inspire your design to improve the existing resources.
You can find help online from people who picked a similar project or read comments under a youtube DIY video. Some people have similar issues that you have been facing in your project, and you will always get some help or find frequently asked questions.
Some people cannot afford the price of the equipment they need to create their projects, and some of their DIYs are necessary (not optional) for their home improvement. Therefore, they get to collect funds for their own DIY projects over some DIY websites.

DIY science, rather more broadly, refers to the process initiated by individuals and groups that tinker, hack, fix, and recreate objects and systems out of their own interest, curiosity, or need and openly share results and outcomes in their networks (Susana et al., 2013).
Recent technological developments (among which mobile computing) are allowing even newer practices unimaginable just two decades ago.
