Because Heaven Still Sends Messengers
In John 8:12 Jesus declared that He is the Light of the World, then He shared a little side note in Matthew 5:14, "Ye are the light of the world".
Think about how important light was to the ancient world. They didn't have flashlights or electric lights. They didn't have glow sticks or battery-operated lanterns. They had candles and oil lamps, and their whole world revolved around when they could get enough light to do things. Think about the winter months, when there is more darkness in the day than light. What did they do when the sun went down at 6 and didn't come up again till 8, and couldn't afford candles or oil? Those who could afford light, were able to work later, and thus could acquire more money. When someone was lost at night, they had limited resources to find them in the dark.
Light and dark ruled their lives. We take it for granted, but it meant everything to them. Now, imagine how powerful that statement must have been to the early Christians. Jesus is the Light of the World. Light brought hope. Light brought life. It opened doors for them. It chased away darkness.
Physical Light Was Everything to Them.
In our day, where we take physical light for granted, perhaps the spiritual light is what is needed most. The light that comes from helping others see their worth. From opening the shades on their souls to allow the hope and peace of the good news of the gospel in.
There are so many ways to do this, and each person has different gifts and ways of bringing light. Letter writing is only one of those ways. Have you ever received a letter of encouragement or praise from someone you loved and respected? What did you do? Did you treasure the letter? Pull it out when you needed a boost? Share it with friends?
Who needs to receive that boost today from you?
