In the SECIP program we learn how to tackle problems and create a solution that achieve the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals). The program run for 10 days of training and in these periods of time, we are taught about meaningful things such as quality education, gender equality and inclusivity.
The concept of this program is to make innovative young people to participate in giving solution to the global communities. It has a separate time to give SECIP candidates to discuss with other fellow candidates in a breakout room. Sometimes there will be an open space where students can show their talent or skill to everyone in the meeting. There are many theories that we can learn from the SECIP program. One of them is about quality education. One of the mentors, Pradeep Kumar, has explained well about it, he shared his experience regarding not being able to spoke English in his home country. But with determination he is one of the lucky ones which are able to learn English properly and find a job. He also mentioned that it is quite hard to get a job in large city like Dali if you can't speak English.
Another theory that we have learned is about inclusivity which was greatly explained by Anne Lasimbang. She worked with farmers to sell turmeric, which was quite difficult to sell. Basically, she helped those farmers to give them some guidance on how to make use of the resources around them and find a solution, which worked very well.
One of the models of SECIP are providing mothers with the right opportunity to work and actively participate in the community. Previously, Anne mentioned that these mothers are usually burdened by their conditions where they have kids to take care of which made them unable to participate in creating a business. So, in here, mindfulness is really the key to create inclusivity. We must be able to talk to the women's family so that she could have the permission to go and participate. As well as providing or finding a space for their children like playground and such to allow this women to do something else like participating in jobs and creating their own business.
The methods used in SECIP are daily feedback and Skill Bazaar. Through daily feedbacks we are able to give our commentaries regarding the program. It can be about anything in particular and the SECIP team will feature the cool ones on their website. It is a great way to improve the program and get inspired by others' opinions. However, one of the examples used in week one is the gaps between the rich and the poor in Malaysia. This is especially focused on the marginalized communities and climate change issues. Moreover, disaster recovery since COVID-19 happens. In which, a lot of people has lost their job or education.
The approaches in SECIP to achieve the goals are by opening ways for community to improve. For example, in terms of quality education, we need to also appreciate the parents in order to encourage the children to achieve more. Nevertheless, encourage young people to think creative and look at learning programs for students who are struggling with education and applying the reduce, reuse, recycle skills in not only some particular groups but also including the whole community.
We have a list of problems we wanted to use. We come up with eight main problems of the global community. Which includes unavailability of teachers, poor infrastructure, no access to the internet, no mobile phones, lack of awareness, inequality of genders and cultural conflict.
In the problem framing stage, initially our team discussed about creating a problem that we all can relate to. So, because all of us are women we decided to add gender inequality as one of our main problems. From these main problems we are able to generate ideas regarding inequality of gender especially in the access to educational system.
In here, we finally agree that we will want to create a solution for disparities of women access to education. Initially, we thought gender inequality is a serious ongoing issue and is happens everywhere. We have also decided that we will use SDGs four, five and ten which we consider to be most suitable to our topics. Finally, we also decided to focus particularly women in India because it has many cases of inequality in education.
I have gained a lot of knowledge during the SECIP program. What's most important is I have gained new information about sustainable entrepreneurs. Previously, I only know that all business is only for-profit matters, but this program has opened my eyes that we can also benefit the community while making a profit, just like mutualism. What I have learned from this program is how to manage time and becoming brave in every situation. I feel grateful for being able to learn these in the program. It has taught me to become resilient and overcome my fears. Lastly, I have also acquired some Artificial Intelligence skills. Previously, I only know that AI is an algorithm which can only give a solution to a problem. But after learning the skills in this program, I learned that there are many streams of AI, and we can basically use AI for almost everything in our day-to-day life.
