Neighborhood Advisory Committee 2014-19

For District Detroit: Little Caesars Arena (LCA) and Related Developments
As a condition of Detroit City Council’s resolution to dispose of city-owned land for the Events Center, a Neighborhood Advisory Committee (NAC) was formed in 2014, to exist for a term of five years, and made up of a mix of 16 community elected and city council-appointed members. While the NAC was advisory, ODM had to listen to its concerns and meet with the NAC, as needed. Since its inception, the NAC has met monthly, and held annual public meetings. The NAC is a precursor to the current process for NACs followed by the Community Benefits Ordinance (CBO), which was passed in 2016.
We held our final public meeting in September 2019. Since that time, we created this website as a record of our work, which includes links to documents and additional content on our Focus Issues.
Affordable Housing
Historic Preservation
Jobs and Small Businesses
Traffic and Parking
After five years, the NAC sees its work as incomplete. There are so many opportunities to improve the quality of life for Detroiters in District Detroit. But instead, Olympia Development of Michigan and the Ilitch Family chose not to be better community partners during this time.
Overall, the City of Detroit and local community need continued advocacy and accountability for neighborhood issues outlined here and in the accompanying tracking document, which can be accessed via the link below.
Here are some additional recommendations we see as being relevant to success in District Detroit:
Accountability for existing affordable housing in the District, including commitments by ODM to support existing residents on Henry Street and in its other residential buildings.
Enforcement of blight ordinance by the City of Detroit, and posting of ODM ownership information on vacant Ilitch-owned properties.
Donate vacant buildings in ODM’s portfolio to qualified affordable housing developer(s), such as Cass Corridor Neighborhood Development Corp CCNDC.
Increase investment and improvements in Cass Park.
Provide free day parking/QLine passes to ease congestion in the Central Business District.
Support City of Detroit Historic Designation Advisory Board upcoming communitywide survey.
Support Midtown Detroit Inc.’s continuing discussion on impacts of traffic on local business.
Support Service Employee International Union’s (SEIU) One Detroit campaign for LCA service staff.
