October is always a full and busy month for Rotary, and Covid notwithstanding, this year is no exception. While Rotarians are walking for all kinds of worthy causes, the community will be hard pressed to miss us out and about. Be it donning hats, or purple for mental health week (month), red for Ending Polio, or exchanging R100 batons, the socially-distant activities still mean meeting the community wherever it is.
This month, I draw your attention to the report from the Western Cluster of 9600 and its recent seminar on Domestic Violence. This type of community leadership, becoming informed on these issues, and combining to make strides in correcting these issues in society is Rotary In Action.
And don't miss the update on the R100 Baton Relay. What's your cluster planning to celebrate the Centenary of Rotary in Australia and New Zealand?
Next month, DGTV will be brimming with videos and images from all over the District (a t-shirt in every hue), and possibly a hat!
Stay safe everyone,
DG Neil (2020/21)

Many thanks to PDG John Lane for his support in spotting the glitches. Thanks to all for your patience while we delve into the 21st Century media.
I'm hoping that this compilation of images will serve as a demonstration of the universality of Rotary in our communities, as well as the opportunity to feature many of the excellent causes and projects that you support.

Western Suburbs Rotary Club members during August were updated on progress of their combined efforts to counter domestic violence.
Kenmore Rotary hosted representatives of the western cluster clubs and community representatives involved in providing services and support to victims of domestic violence.
The evening featured three speakers from organizations the cluster clubs have been financially supporting during the past year.
The first speaker was Fiona Foley, the Chaplain at Kenmore State Primary School, which is one of a group of local school “Chappies” that benefited from a day of professional development with an experienced trainer in field of domestic violence, funded by Rotary.
Ms. Foley said the training covered aspects such as the definition of DV, the forms it may take, the phases of a typical abuse cycle, and the signs and symptoms that a child caught in a DV situation may present with at school.
She also gave an insight into her role in devising strategies to support and empathise with affected children.
Next speaker was Michelle Beatty, an equine manager and facilitator of the local endeavour “Reason to Thrive” which provides a hands-on, innovative and practical way of learning life skills and gaining personal growth with a horse as teacher.
Ms. Beatty said that as a result of funding from the western cluster Rotary clubs, 35 women survivors of DV have been supported through Reason to Thrive’s Rebuild program.
She described the benefits of equine assisted learning were likely due to the qualities of horses which include their heightened sensitivity, honesty and non-judgement. Reason to Thrive is now offering a program for youths from surviving families.
DV Connect, a not-for-profit charity with the singular mission to help Queenslanders live free from domestic, family and/or sexual violence, was also represented.
Queensland CEO, Beck O’Connor told the meeting that DV Connect provided state-wide specialist domestic, family and sexual violence crisis counselling, intervention, information and pathways to safety (emergency housing and refuge) for 18 years.
Staffed by highly skilled specialist crisis intervention and trauma counsellors, the service operates three telephone helplines. These are Womensline, Mensline, Sexual Assault Helpline, providing specialist trauma counselling nationally.
Ms. O’Connor said helplines received more than 120,000 calls last financial year, which equated to one call for help every seven minutes across 24 hours.
She said that while family violence took many forms, the most common was intimate partner violence (IPV) towards women. One in three Australian women have experienced violence since the age of 15. Tragically, on average one woman is killed per week in Australia - 41 this year already.
The meeting concluded with a vote of thanks to the speakers and to the combined Rotary Clubs from the State Member for Moggill and Shadow Minister for Families, Dr. Christian Rowan.
Dr Rowan provided a summary of the significant learnings from the speakers’ talks and said combatting domestic violence and providing appropriate support services must always be a top priority for all levels of Government.

You know you are getting close to Nanango when you pass the huge orange piece of coal mining equipment called ‘Hannibal’s Bucket.’ It is a landmark so big you can drive your car into it to take a picture!
Straight up the highway, through the traffic light (the first you will see for hours!) is the Tourist Information Centre. Of course, like all info centres, you can get maps, brochures and other information, explained in detail by the dedicated volunteers. But this place offers much more than that - it is a terrific museum! Features history of the lumber industry, dairying, and the more recent Tarong power house. All displays are interactive and will talk to you when you push the buttons. There are even two big engines that generated power for the butter factory and the town. These can actually be started upon request.
If you like shopping, the Nanango Country Markets are the biggest and best in the entire area. Held n the showgrounds on the first Saturday of each month, they have over 350 stalls. But no dogs allowed.
If you are thinking of bringing your dog or cat when you come for the conference, but can’t take it to the meetings, there is a really fantastic boarding kennel in Nanango. The Pet Motel is wonderfully clean and run by people who love animals, your dog even gets a bath before you collect him. Cats get a bath? Ask them! Only about 20 minutes to Kingaroy.
Nanango also has a golf course, walking tracks, and a go-kart track suitable for adults!

As PRIPs from Australia and New Zealand, we feel a special affinity towards Sir Clem and we think it is extremely appropriate to honour his memory through an appeal for the cause that he held so dear—PolioPlus.
So we teamed up with Past RI Director, Noel Trevaskis and RI Director Elect, Jessie Harman, along with Regional End Polio Now Coordinator, Bob Aitken, to formulate a plan. The result is The Sir Clem Renouf Polio Appeal. You may have seen Bob’s recent articles about Sir Clem in RDU.
How can you participate?
You and your club may already be in the process of arranging polio fundraisers for World Polio Day (24 October) and Foundation Month (November). It would be wonderful if these events could be dedicated to the memory of Sir Clem;
Two of these events are the annual Polio Train Ride and Polio Movie Event and these events will be promoted in Sir Clem’s name;
District 9800’s Rotary Walk with Us, an online platform that enables Rotarians and others to seek sponsorship for going for a walk. You can encourage members and friends to register to walk. See details on Facebook: RotaryWalkWithUs; and
And clubs and members can pay tribute to Sir Clem by supporting PolioPlus, directly.
We look forward to all the ways Rotarians in 9600 will honour Sir Clem.
Kind regards,
