May is Youth Services Month, and Rotary celebrates Youth Services through the many programs available to young people in our District, such as RYLA, RYPEN, RYEP, and RYDA.
Rotary believes in developing the next generation of leaders. Our programs help younger leaders build leadership skills, expand education and learn the value of service.
While in Kingaroy for conference, representatives from RAWCS were distributing $500 vouchers to local farmers, farm workers, suppliers and contractors, to be spent locally. In all, $20,000 was given in drought relief thanks to fundraising and RC Bribie Island, in particular. Thanks to all for supporting the local producers and businesses in drought affected areas of our District.
Between Galas, Rotarians in the Park, actual relays, and cake cutting, the celebrations for the Centenary of Rotary in Australia and New Zealand have marked the occasion well. I hope you managed to participate in any or many of these activities, and that you've shared with your colleagues and Rotary family all the good things that Rotary has to offer.
While it has been busy, we reported the passing of two noted Rotarians PDG Allan Male in April, and Rotarian Brian Stevens in February. We extend our condolensces to their families and friends at this time, and remember their contributions to Rotary and our District in this issue.
This month, we focus on Youth Services and I draw your attention to all the activities that are taking place for Youth involvement over the coming weeks, particularly ARC (Australian Rotaract Conference) on 15th and 16th May via Zoom. If you've not been to a Rotaract Australia event, or have not experienced the energy of Rotaract meetings, your chance is now. The effervescence, spirit, and verve is contagious - the best kind - and you will be reassured of the continuity, character and strength of Rotary imbued in our young people. Not to mention the rate at which they can plant trees - that is awesome! Please enjoy this issue.

What is RYLA?
Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) is an exciting and challenging training program which aims to equip leaders and potential leaders between the ages of 18 and 26 with the personal, leadership and citizenship skills required to succeed in all areas of their life. The program provides participants with an unforgettable experience in life, learning and laughter in a regional setting.
Where is RYLA?
RYLA is held at Luther Heights Youth camp, located at Coolum Beach, an engaging venue with ocean views and friendly staff who are dedicated to creating the best opportunities and experiences for you.
The Rotary Youth Exchange Program provides a unique opportunity for young Australians to experience at first hand the many cultures of different countries, a new way of life and in some instances another language. Often, the friendships made will be life-long as a result of the building of goodwill and understanding between countries.
They’ll spend up to 12 months living and studying in a foreign country, learning a lot about themselves and the culture of their adopted, host families.
Students will grow considerably in self-confidence, tolerance and self-reliance through having to accept greater responsibility for themselves and their own actions.
The program for Year 11 students encourages them to take greater responsibility for themselves and their friends before they face the challenges of driving solo or riding as a passenger with a new driver. RYDA is a one-day program, conducted to highlight crucial road safety messages. Supporting the graduated licensing scheme, the program focuses on the key government big five road safety issues of:
driving faster than the speed limit;
driving under the influence of alcohol;
driving when fatigued;
the use of seatbelts; and
the effects of driver distractions.

Brian Stevens devoted his life to his family and his local community. He was an active Rotarian for 45 years, 43 of which were with the Kenmore Rotary Club, of which he was a charter member in 1969.
Brian grew up in Toowong during the depression years, and like many families from that era, money was scarce. He attended Toowong primary school and was then fortunate to be awarded a scholarship to Churchie where he completed his Junior Certificate. With his older siblings away due to the war, he remained at home to nurse his ailing mother. When she died in 1944, he signed on with the Navy, aged 18.
After completing his naval training, he joined the HMAS Nizam undertaking escort duties in the Pacific in the last stages of the war. After the Japanese surrender, the Nizam was the first Australian ship into Tokyo Harbour, remaining there until after the surrender was signed.
After the war, Brian completed an accounting traineeship with White and Hancock. This led to a career in company management with him holding senior positions with Sunbeam and then Carricks Limited.
Brian married Nancy Burcher in 1951 and together they raised their daughter Ruth, and three sons Paul, Nick, and Tim in the family home that they built on acreage in Fig Tree Pocket.
Brian was always heavily involved in the Kenmore and Fig Tree Pocket communities. In the late 1950’s he was on the committee that started the Kenmore District Kindergarten. In the same era, he was very active in the Fig Tree Pocket Progress Association, who were heavily involved in a series of protests relating to the proposed location of the Centenary Highway.
In 1967 Brian joined the South Brisbane Rotary Club. This was the start of his 45-year continuous association with Rotary that played an important role in his life. In 1969 he joined the Kenmore Rotary Club as a charter member. He was the Club’s third President in 1971 and held many other positions on its committees over the years. He was awarded a Paul Harris Fellow in 1988. He retired from active rotary service in 2012, aged 85.
Brian loved the outdoors. In the early days there were regular family camping trips with lots of bushwalking in National Parks around Southeast Queensland. In 1970 Brian and Nancy had the foresight to build a holiday shack on South Stradbroke Island. This primitive shack, with no electricity or even hot water in the early days, became the centre of family holidays with lots of swimming, sailing, and fishing during the day and games of cards or monopoly in the evenings.
His involvement with and support of the local community continued through Rotary. He was an active member of an active club and was always involved in fund raising activities or providing volunteer labour whether it be for painting the Glenleighden school or selling tickets for the annual Kenmore Rotary Christmas Trailer raffle.
A particular project that Brian was proud of and thoroughly enjoyed was helping to start the Brigidine College Interact Club and then guiding it for many years.
Having a desire to have a regular game of tennis with friends, Brian formed a tennis group in 1982. Many of the group were like minded members of Kenmore Rotary. Brian passed on the organisation of the group and retired from playing in 2011. The same tennis group, including some present and past Kenmore Rotarians, are still playing, almost 40 years later.
Brian believed in the ideals of Rotary. He always kept a paperweight inscribed with the Rotary 4-way test on his desk and he applied that test to all aspects of his working and private life.
Saturday 17th April at McCusky Park in Kelvin Grove was an all Rotary affair. Click on the videos below for more of the action.
Six Rotary Clubs from the Hinterland Cluster celebrated the 100 Years of Rotary in Australia & New Zealand with a breakfast on Saturday 24th April at Recreation Clubhouse & Beersheba Living Museum in Ziza Park, North Maleny, as a cluster: the Rotary Clubs of Nambour, Maleny which hosted breakfast, Nambour 76, Woombye-Palmwoods, Glass House Mountains & Sunshine Coast Central.
Rotarian David Buckton from Nambour 76 Club, arrived in his vintage car, a 1919 Essex Speedster upon which it was decided to challenge his 102-year-old car in a relay of a banner. Not one of the Rotarians could keep up with the car, so the Essex won the relay, and the banner retained by Nambour, the first club formed in the District.
DG Neil celebrated with the clubs on the Sunshine Coast at the Maroochy RSL adding to the string of in-person events Rotarians and Rotaractors have enjoyed across the District in 2021.

Without the investment of the Rotary Club of Karana Downs Bellbowrie and particularly, the work of David and Mary Kearney, the success of the annual (except 2020) District Tree Planting would not be possible. The collaboration between the Brisbane City Council, and those community groups invested in the wellbeing of flora and fauna such as Birds Queensland and those supporting and managing wildlife walking trails, has resulted in the restoration of a biodiverse habitat from a dairy farm in Upper Kedron, bordering Samford Valley. The smoking ceremony performed by elder and member of the Jagera people set the scene for a lightning planting of 2,500 plants in 45 minutes. Anyone would think that there were scones and tea waiting. Many thanks to Councillor Steven Toomey and his staff for the excellent support of this program.
